My Piggy Needs Help....

I've been out all day and just gone to check my piggies and thought it was unusual that one didn't come out for food. When I opened the bedroom Gizmo pig was hunched up, feels swollen and won't eat: (

I phoned the emergency vet and she wasn't much use. I've brought the pigs inside, tried offering hay and grass but she won't touch it. I feel so helpless and don't want to wake up tomorrow to maybe a piggy that is not here anymore......

Now I feel bad as she jumped out my hands earlier this week and fell about 3ft but has been fine as I thoroughly checked her over. She was fine this morning so I don't understand what's happening.

Please please help me as I feel so upset and want to help my poorly baby x
 
She's had carrot this morning and I went to give them pepper this evening but noticed she did not come out for it, aswell as pellets and hay. She is literally sat puffed up and looks so sad. Vet made me feel like little animals aren't worth bothering with as just called duty one and I feel like I can't just give up : (
 
Hmm...I'm not an expert on this so I don't want to give advice as I could be wrong! However, what I will say is that you do need to get her to the vets. If your vet wouldn't help then get her somewhere else. She's your pet and worth it! I wish the best of luck, hopefully the experts will see this soon and be able to offer more information! xx
 
She sounds like she is badly bloated. Please have her seen by any vet that will see her as an emergency and see whether it is gassing or a blockage (if necessary by an x-ray). If it gas, the belly will feel very tight and sounds hollow if you knock against. Gassy bloat can be treated although you will be up against it.
If it is a blockage, it glugs like a water filled bottle. In that case, having her pts under the circumstances may be the kindest option as it is very painful. :(

In case of gassy bloat, please ask the vet for:
- zantac (ranitidine hydrochloride) against the gassing
- emeprid or metoclopramide (gut stimulant)
- metacam for the pain

You also want to vibrate/massage, either with an electric toothbrush or a massaging car seat. The vibrations car journey can also help to break up the gas and shift it.
 
Puffed up and not interested is definitely not good. Wiebke has given you all the advice you need. Hopefully you can get Gizmo to a vet as soon as possible. Good luck x
 
I've just tried to hand feed her but she won't even chew : ( she is just sat there hardly moving. In tears as feel like such a bad mummy that it's my fault for not holding her properly the other day (I've never dropped a piggy before) but this may be totally unrelated.

Think I will call the vet back as I can't just leave her can I : ( : ( : (
 
I called the vet back and having to pay about £75 : ( which I don't have but I can't leave her. I don't think she's coming home with me but can't leave her like this. Feel embarrassed as look a right state x
 
She's gone : ( I genuinely don't understand what happened and it feels surreal. Keep thinking I easnt the best owner, didn't give her enough cuddles etc and now it's too late x

I'm so sorry. You 100% did the right thing though. Sometimes these things come on so quickly we can't do a thing about it but help them to the bridge.

Bloat and blockage often strike right out of the blue; most of the experienced members have lost piggies to it at some point; I have lost two so far. You are not a bad mummy.

From what has happened, it sounds like it was a blockage; there is nothing you can do. It just happens, and it has nothing to do with her fall.:(

BIG HUGS AND LOTS OF THEM:(. You must be devastated, but these things can, and do, happen unfortunately. If you are left with one lonely guinea pig please have a look at the thread on caring for a bereaved guinea pig, you are going to be supporting each other through your shared loss. You take care and please don't beat yourself up x
 
Aww I'm so sorry for whats happened. Definitely dont feel guilty and you absolutely should not feel embarassed, both me and my husband were in floods of tears at the vets when we lost one of ours back in Feb. I am sure your piggy had a lovely life with you
