Hi, I’m new to the forum and less than two weeks ago my beloved guinea pig passed away. He was always really happy and popcorned constantly. Me and my family went on vacation for a week and the neighbors (who have owned a guinea pig before) took care of him for us. About three days before we were planned to return home, we got word that Taz, my piggy, was not eating. I, knowing how serious this could be, cried and begged to my parents to take him to the vet. They waited about a day until finally agreeing to get one of my grandparents to take him to the vet. The vet said that he had a bit of GI stasis (like I suspected), a small respiratory issue, and a heart murmur that we had not seen before. However, everyone acted like, with treatment and medication, he would be completely fine especially considering he was only two years old. The following morning, my parents broke the news to me that he didn’t make it. This may have been the saddest i’ve been ever. It really messed with me since we were so attached to each other. I’m especially bothered that I didnt get to see my baby before his passing.
Recently, I have been debating on getting another guinea pig. I cant decide if this new pet would ease my pain and make me much happier again, or if it would remind me of Taz and make me sad and discouraged. My birthday is next month and I may get one. Taz was a texel, my dream guinea pig. Should I try a different breed? I'm very interested in the hairless guinea pigs, would that be a good pet? What do you think, I would love to have another piggy but I don’t know if we would bond the same as me and Taz did. I’m hoping that God will send an opportunity my way with a piggy that loves me like Taz did.

Hi

I am very sorry for your loss.

If you want to continue with guinea pigs, please consider a bonded pair; guinea pigs are social group animals and really profit from the round the clock company of their own kind. You have your own life with its own commitments but a single piggy has only you - whenever you have time for them.

Please be aware that skinnies have an even higher metabolism and a slightly shorter life span. They need to eat more and the poo a lot.

It is however easier to take your piggy journey into a new direction rather than repeating the same and putting unrealistic expectations on the newbie - each piggy will take you into a new direction. Pairs will open your eyes to the fascinating world of interaction which is a lot more complex and differentiated than most owners assume.
