We have NO idea what happened, she was fine yesterday am and then this am I found her laying under their mezzanine, laying on her side, legs sticking straight out, eyes open. I find this strange, I thought small animals (most animals actually) curl up into themselves when they die. It looked like Scooter just fell over on her side and that was it.

She was happy, healthy, eating, drinking and showing no signs of illness. I know I didn't see her out and about much yesterday afternoon and she didn't come out like she normally does when I put fresh hay in their cage before bed last night but I didn't think much of it.

Now our second piggy we got about a week later but she had the runs so we took her to vet, she was on probiotics for a week and the issue was resolved, she was declared healthy and hasn't had any digestion issues since but she does make some funny weezing sounds normally when she is eating hay. Does this sound like any sort of illness that could be the "silent killer" of Scooter?

I am heartbroken, she was our first and we've only had her for a little over a month. My daughter is 2 and adores her and now I don't know what to do. We were basically told that we should wait a couple of weeks to see if our second piggy, Penny, lives or dies before introducing another one.

And now I'm crying because I just saw my avatar picture of my daughter and Scooter... :'(

Oh gosh I really am so sorry for your loss. Sadly guinea pigs can die suddenly. It could have been a heart problem. With your other piggy wheezing that is a sign she needs to see a vet. Wheezing can be the sign of a upper respiratory infection and needs quick treatment. With guinea pigs they hide signs of pain or illness so once they display any abnormalities they need to see a vet. Is your vet knowledgeable in guinea pigs? This can make all the difference.

You are welcome to post a tribute in the rainbow bridge thread. I am so sorry this has happened.

Thank you, and our vet is the one that works closely with several pet stores in the area so she works with many piggies and other small mammals. I was so shocked when I found her, I couldn't believe it. This is crazy but I actually lined the box we put her in with bedding thinking she would come back to which of course is not possible. It breaks my heart everytime my daughter says her name, which was Scooter but for my 2 year old it's "Skoober". :'( I just hate not knowing what happened, she was so well taken care of and loved.

I understand how you feel as the same thing happened to me. It is a terrible shock.

I lost my guinea pig when I was a little girl in a similiar, the only difference was, my Jenny was in my arms when she passed away. She had like a convulsion or maybe it waa a heart attack, but I'm just glad she was in my arms when it happened. My 2 girls now have guinea pigs, they 2 are enjoying them just as much as I did as a little girl. My eldest Amber-Jade has a female who is white called Kiss and my youngest Danika-Rose has a big boofy male, brown called Marshmallow, I claimed their first born who is a boy, a beautiful dark grey/silver called BANDY as he looked like a bandicoot when he was born, all ears. KISS has since had 4 more babies in 1 littter, Chomper (brown), Smokey(grey), Tinker (white) & Mowie (white), they are just over a week and little characters.

I am so sorry what a shock for you, it could have been a heart attack, they are pretty common. However, as your remaining piggy is wheezing I agree that she needs to see the vet just in case.

I'm very sorry for your sad loss. I would definitely get Penny checked for URI from what you've said, it sounds very much like she needs treatment quickly. R.I.P. Scooter. xx

I am really sorry for the loss of your beautiful piggy. Huge hugs to you at this sad time

RIP Scooter
