Hi everyone

So today my Smithy was put to sleep due to having a lung infection which of course was a very sad moment, but we tried our best and are happy about the great life he had :) but his breed brother, Frankie is now left on his own and initially loved the extra space drool but i get a gut feeling that he's starting to miss his pal :( . Frankie is 2 1/2 years old and is quite an extrovert, chirpy piggy while Smithy was quite a laid back piggy but Frankie enjoyed his companionship and just the sense of him being there. I'm leaning towards trying to adopt or rescue another piggy but was unsure on a few points . Firstly i live in Glasgow so was wondering if someone could tell me a few rescue centres etc. around the place so i know who to go to if i decide to get another pig. It would be good if someone could recommend one :). Secondly , should i try to get another piggy that is the same age, size and colour to make the "change" less confusing for Frankie? Could someone also help me as to what to do to help Frankie at the moment. I'm giving him more attention etc but if there was any toys etc. or changes i could make to his daily life to distract him from his brother not being around then i think that would help. Also how should i go about introducing a new pig if that happens and what should ido to introduce the two pigs to each other without harming Frankie or causing any fights.

Sorry for the many questions, i've never been in this situation before :( if i have any more in the next few days i will edit the thread :)

I'm so sorry about Smithy - it's the final act of love we show for our furry friends when nothing else can be done.
I would find a rescue where you could take Frankie so he could chose a little friend himself - that way, you don't have to worry about introductions and things not working out.
Sorry, I don't know of rescues in your area, Wiebke a member on here may be able to point you in the direction you need.
Good luck, sending hugs at this sad time.
Also, why not pop a little tribute to Smithy on the Rainbow Bridge section so you can share his life with others on here, it may help to have something to look back to as well x>>

Hi! I am sorry about your loss; it is very gutting. We have a Rainbow Pets section where you are welcome to pay a tribute to Smithy and share your grief.

The best way to rebond a single boar is by dating him at a rescue that offers this service under expert supervision. That way, full attention can be paid to the essential key to any successful boar bond - character compatibility. It also minimises your risks and maximises the chances of success, as Frankie can be tried with several candidates.

Sadly, there are currently not many recommended rescues active in Scotland, but perhaps our Scottish members can give tips as to more local rescues.

Thank you for replying everyone :) Still feeling pretty sad :( Thanks for the advice about the rescue etc. definitely going to find Frankie a new friend and have found a few rescues places to call tomorrow morning :)

I've spent the last 1-2 hours reading (and welling up) at the many lovely Rainbow Bridge memories and it's made me appreciate how lucky we are to love them and have had such wonderful Guinea Pigs as pets , and that the sadness of their death is nothing compared to the amount of love and fun they give to us and that when you've done your best to care and love for them you can do no more :) Very happy that Smithy was put to sleep peacefully with the people who loved him greatly with him.

Frankie's still doing fine at the moment but hopefully if we can get a "dating" session set up soon it will help him take his mind of where Smithy is in a few days when he notices that Smithy's been away for a wee while . :)

I've also heard of the idea of fostering piggies, so that's just another idea.

Sorry for your loss. Hope all is going well. :)

Awww hugs, so sorry you lost your smithy. I hope he picks himself a friend when he goes dating!

Really worry to hear about your darling Smithy 8...8...8...
RIP Smithy run free at the bridge, enjoy nibbling on lovely crunchy dandelion leafies and sweet corn silks and have fun popcorning thru the lush green meadows with new buddies, you'll be very sadly missed by your whole family and little friend Frankie but NEVER ever forgotten xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
