My Piggy With Bulging Eye

Good luck getting the pain relief. My Dulcie recently had a retrobulbar abscess. Unfortunately hers developed very quickly and the eye had to be removed but often a course of Zithromax can delay things and sometimes be enough for the eye not to need removing. If that does happen though they cope very well.

Thank you. I’m glad Dulcie is doing ok and gives me some hope Cookie does have retrobulbar abscess (instead of tumour) for I know now that is operable ..

Hi

Quick update ..we are last day of holiday and back tomorrow..my good friend is hand feeding her everyday but the eyeA70D0DBC-92A5-402B-9DBD-099B2E6FA0F8.webp has worsened ..the recommended vet has been booked for Tuesday but I think it’s urgent now ..only thing is the vet lady good with piggies not back till then

Can your friend take her to the vet today? She really needs to be seen as soon as possible.

That definitely looks like a retrobulbar abscess going by what Dulcie's looked like. Is it the Cat and Rabbit clinic you are booked in with? you could see if they are able to fit her in sooner? Is she on pain relief? Just to warn you it is likely the eye will need to be removed as it has dried out. I was told that once it gets to this stage it is not possible to save it, I am only going by the photo though. They cope very well with one eye, so after a period of initial adjustment she should be ok.

I hope so! It means they can help her hopefully ! I’ve managed to get an appointment booked for tomorrow morning ..going to rush her in and although the lady who is cavy savvy is not there till Monday, at least we can get cookie attended to until Monday too ..will keep all posted ! I’ve got all fingers crossed they can help my poor piggy!

Hi everyone

Thank you for all your help in this forum.

It is with heartbreaking news that I had to say yes to cookie being put to sleep, she was examined under X Ray and her back teeth was apparently all worn away one side and pushed out to the skull possibly causing the eye issue ... I was told the quality of life for cookie will be compromised greatly even if the surgery to remove the eye was successful...

It was absolutely the hardest thing I had to make a decision on and decided to PTS while Cookie was still under general ...

We have put her next to her partner Oreo in the garden, her friend that we bought together ... finally to catch up after crossing the rainbow bridge..

The Goddard veterinary group and Anne O’Meara plus the team there was brilliant considering how difficult this was ...

Oh how terribly sad for you. Cookie is now out of pain and it is very hard to say goodbye to a dear friend.

I am so sorry.
That’s such a painful decision to make.
Cookie is now free from her pain and you need time to grieve.
Be gentle with yourself now

Thanks all for the kind words. My daughter has been comforted and big hug with my wife that found it very difficult... I had my private time to grieve and celebrate Cookie looking through all the photos of her since buying her and Oreo from the Pet shop.

The most emotional moment for me was unwrapping Cookie from the blanket the vet gave us, giving her a hug goodbye before settling her in our garden ... she looked really peaceful and not having to hide any pain anymore ...

On a more practical note, I’ve arranged my other remaining girls for health checks with the new vets and arranging pet insurance with all of them ...

:hug::hug:Have a hug each, you obviously need lots. Have more. Hugs aren't rationed in my house, :Dif you need a cuddle you need a cuddle :hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug:

Thinking of you all at this sad time.:soz:

Huge hugs for you all. What a terrible decision to have to make and it never gets easier. You have done the right thing and you have not let cookie suffer so please take some solace in that
