Angus had to be put to sleep on Wednesday at about 9am
He was neutered on Tuesday and overnight, somehow, all his insides had come out... I am so sad, I cant believe I have lost him :'(

I have never heard of this happening! I havent read about it on here either!
I am so angry that this has happened...

He was neutered 8.30 am on Tuesday... his first dose of pain meds was at 2.30pm and the second at 8.30 pm (every 6 hours) (it was .5mL of Tramadol)
He was also given 1 dose of revolution at the vets for his mites...
with the other doses to be 10 days away from eachother.

He had eaten some dry food but I'm not sure if he had any water...

All he did was sit in his house all bundled up, he looked so angry...
I lifted his house and stroked him a few times but he didnt respond to my touch he didnt move.... he didnt even itch himself!

All I want to know is...

Why did this happen?
What caused it to happen?
Could it have been prevented?
Has this ever happened to you or have you ever heard of this happening?

Thanks so much...

Sounds like it might have been a prolapse? :-\

Awww thats horrible, I'm so sorry BW :( :'( RIP little one!

It does sound a bit like that... where he was sleeping, the towel was covered in blood and mum could see his intestines and everything :'( I didnt get to see but I think that is a good thing...

What causes a prolapse?

Tbh not sure about in guinea pigs :-\

Ive seen it in cattle and in that case its mainly caused by stress, baterial infections or dehydration in my experience...so not sure if it would be the same causes in piggies :-\

Thanks PP :)

I hope his pain meds hadnt worn off... I really hope he didnt suffer :'(

Sorry to read this BW. Inspite of it all I think you did all you could to help him have the best life possible so try not to beat your self up too much, though I know you will. As you know by now I've had over 50 guineas castrated and this has never happened to me, post castrate abscesses (3) is all I've dealt with. I have no idea if it could've been prevented or why it should happen.

BW so sorry to hear about your gorgeous Angus. Don't beat yourself up honey, you loved your little furball and did what you thought was best for him to have a happy life. Big hugs from me and my gang.

Baby-Wilson,
I am so sorry this tragedy has happened to you.You were only trying to pair your piggies up,and did what you thought was right for them.

The inguanal canal does not close over after castration so there is always the risk of post op prolapse of the abdominal contents. This can happen a few days, weeks or even months after the op.Fortunately it does not happen very often,so you and Angus were just extremely unlucky.

I'd not heard of anything liike this before. That's such a shocking and awful thing to happen, you were just trying to give your piggies the best and most responsible way of happiness. It sounds like Angus was really, really unlucky, although that will probably be of little comfort to you :-\ **Hug**

I don't understand how this can happen after neutering.. I don't know anything about this sort of thing but is it just a very unluicky tragedy or is it something that the vet did or didn't do that caused it? Do vets warn people about it before the op?

I am so sorry to hear about Angus bw :'( thinking of you. I have a friend who is a vet and I was hoping that she or her husband would neuter my boar. But when I asked her she explained to me how difficult it is to actually neuter a piggie its not as easy as rabbits, cat or dogs because close to the neuter site thier is a hernia ring that has to be stiched back in to place. She then recommened a vet that had done loads of piggie neuters with good success rates. I did not use them but used another vet that had just as much success with piggies. I hope this helps you in some way please do not feel bad its not your fault. thinking of you.

Vets should certainly warn the owner of the risk of prolapse, even though the risk is small.

A competant vet who is used to operating on rodents should be able to stich the tunic skin across the inguanal canal opening. This will help prevent the prolapse. It is possible that some surgeons do not do this..but even when competently done, there is a small risk of the canal breaking open.

I was not warned... basicly I went in, weighed him, she put him under... 30 mins later she is done!

I signed a paper for Wilson which basicly said that I consent the surgery and blah blah blah! LMAO

Mum thinks he just ripped himself apart... I just dont believe it happened at all :'(

Thankyou everyone for your kind words and trying to help me figure this out :)

You guys said that Angus and I were very unlucky... this is why it is so hard for me to believe... if it was such a small chance of it happening then why did it happen to me :'(

I was reading a book last night and the main characters cats' name is Angus, and he was getting neutered too :'(
Also on the news tonight a teenage boy went on holiday and got attacked by a shark... his name was also Angus :'(

Maybe its just hurt Angus week :'(
