Adult Guinea Pig
Hello,
My poor wee soul was rushed to the vet this evening.
I noticed Saturday evening and Sunday he seemed a little sleepier than usual and was in his pigloo a lot. So I weighed him on Sunday and he was down from 950g to 890g in a week. I weighed him yesterday and he was 866g. I watched him for a while gauging how he was and I thought he was holding his left back leg akwardly. I did put him on a flat surface and he walked fine on all four legs so I put it down to my imagination. I decided to start syringing as the weight loss was getting worrying.
This morning I woke up and he had a terrible runny bottom really liquidy and he was covered in watery urine/poo. So I cleaned him up and decided not to syringe feed incase it was a gut issue and I was making it worse. I made an appointment today though and insisted on getting seen. Glen the most wonderful vet he is accomodated and stayed late to see me as he also felt he needed to be seen.
I came home this evening to still a very messy bottom that had not cleared up at all. He came to see me but looked duller. Quickly weighed him:846g8...8...8....
Rushed to vets and he had a thorough examination......ALWAYS trust your instinct. He has a huge lump in a veyr uncommon area between his leg joint and bis tail bone, hence he WAS holding his leg akwardly. Even after I looked at him and checked him over I missed it. I cant stress enough that people seek vets when piggies are ill. I felt awful but Glen said not to worry as he nearly missed it himself and its very very unusual.
The upshot is he's very concerned for him and has kept him in. He says the first stage is getting him stable after this we shall treat the 90% certain absess/lump. He's going to ring at about 11pm to give me an update and start him on metaclopromide, pro biotic and syringe feeding round the clock. When he stabalises going to aspirate lump and confirm its an absess and then go forward with treatment. But says right now the issue is how poorly he is. So Ive left him in Glen and insisted on making sure his little house and tunnel and his own food bowls are with him in hospital.
SO PLEASE wish him all the luck as Glen said he would likely not have been here on Saturday 8...
