My Poor Little Pop. Advice Please?

Managing to get critical care in for now. Diarrhoea very bad and his under belly is very messy and smelly. Can I wash him or will this be too stressful? Vet says to continue with Zantac and Baytril tonight and see how he is in the morning.

Okay guys so it's day 4. He isn't happy taking the critical care but I am still giving him it. He hasn't eaten anything either. He is still weeing. Diarrhoea is not as bad but no formed poops again. I am beginning to think about his quality of life at the moment. If he isn't eating by himself and doesn't want to eat am I prolonging his sufferings? He is my beautiful boy but I'm not sure what to do. Vets say there is nothing else they can do and to just keep going with mids. Just praying for him to want to eat

If the diarrhea is getting better, then it is worth hanging in there for a little longer.

I know it can be stressful, but I think you should keep trying a little longer. When one of my piggies had bad diarrhoea I just wiped his messy tummy with lukewarm water and cotton wool. Then dried him with more cotton wool, it seemed less stressful for him than bathing.xx

I am keeping going with hourly feeds he is taking about 2ml. He is waddling away when I get near with the syringe bless him. Checked with the vet and they said they can give him pain med tomorrow. I know he's still fighting because I had him on the carpet while I was preparing feed and when I went into the kitchen he was following bless him! No poops today but at least their is no diarrhoea. He has just had Zantac so will see what happens. He does have a bit of mushy poop around his bum so I know his bowel is still working. Just keeping my fingers crossed at the moment.

Thanks for your replies everyone. It really helps to have someone to talk to. :)

As long as he has still got some fight in him and is interested in life, it is worth to keep going. Try to see whether you can get up to 5 ml into him with each session and to get as close to 40 ml in 24 hours as you can get. I know it can be a real fight with a piggy off its food and take a lot of chivvying. The lack of poos reflects the food intake from a day or two ago.

But the good news is that he is getting enough food into him to keep him going. He still has energy to go walk-about and to fight the syringe! Once the poos are firming up and he is feeling better in himself, feeding him is going to get gradually easier. ;)

The only things I can add is ensuring that you are getting much more food into him, this will help regulate his guts. We tend to do even more than Wiebke does. 10-15ml a feed to get that fibre going through and help a lot.

Another medication you can try if he has diarrhoea is questran. It's useful if there is an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the guts and helps break them down. We use it sometimes in piggies or bunnies with diarrhoea.

Hope this helps. He sounds like he's still doing okay. You need to keep up with all the medications and do lots more syringe feeding. Sick piggies take a lot of work and dedication and they can be very exhausting, your doing well.

Fingers crossed for you.

Never heard a sound like that from a piggie before so can't help. Someone will be along soon I'm sure who will know what it is.

My boy Gibson does this quite regularly. He's been to the vet and there seems to be no medical reason for it. It is exactly the same noise.

The first time he did it was around midnight on a Sunday, I was terrified, wrapped him up warm and cuddled him, was so worried we were going to lose him as it was constant and so loud. A quick cough and it stopped..!

It seems he gets this with his nuggets, though not every time, and occasionally with hay. It's like something is a little caught in his throat and a cough dislodges it.

Ask the vet to check in case there is something going on, but try not to worry too much if they don't find anything. Gibson was actually doing this this morning at 6am, but it right as rain, eating and drinking as normal.. I think some piggies are just noisy..

I hope the other issues rectify themselves quickly. I know it's probably silly, but have you an electric toothbrush you can wrap in a tea towel and slowly move along his sides/underneath him, to try and stimulate his gut?

Sending hugs x

Thanks everyone! I took him to the vets and the vet said that his bloat seems a little better :) he has given him an injection for pain and I have a new drug to start giving him in the afternoon. He is super lively so the vet was pleased with how he seemed. When I brought him home he hopped out of the carrier himself and walked up to me. He has still got diarrhoea so still cleaning him up every so often. Hoping he will start eating soon!

I just read the posts here. I can't be so helpful but to say my heart goes out to you and your Popcorn. You are doing everything you can for him and I know he understands.

Thinking of you both and wishing a very heartfelt speedy recovery to health again.

Hi everyone just a quick update
This morning he had really bad diarrhoea again but I have given him a good wipe down and no diarrhoea this afternoon. Some mushy poops this afternoon so that’s an improvement! This morning he was weeking for food but wouldn’t eat anything but a bit of celery. ( I only gave him a little bit) I am still on critical care every hour.

Hi guys so sadly he is still not eating. He is having critical care every two hours. He does have a little hay every now and then. He is still losing weight so going back to vet tomorrow.

Guys he is eating abit himself! This morning he had some pellets and a few veggies. He has been losing weight gradually but yesterday he was 962g and today he is 973 :). He is also eating some hay. He is still on critical care as he does stop eating after a bit.

Another slight worry (there always is with this poor guy) is some of his pee is a little bit pink. His pee this evening is more yellow though.

So Popcorn is still very reluctant to eat but he has suddenly started nibbling the newspaper we have in ...
He will eat a couple of pieces of food and then that's it. The next vet appointment is Thursday so will see how he goes on today and tomorrow.

Just checked on my little guy who is starting to eat again and found another possible problem. Anyone got any idea why his bits look like this? I have left him an hour and it looks the same?

Oh dear! Poor piggy. :( That doesn't look comfortable. I can't offer any advice, but I hope he's sorted soon!

Hi thank you for your reply. I gave him a bum wash and well his things back in :) I cleaned it and now it seems to be staying in so that’s good. He also put on weight! From 978g to 1.072 :)
