my poor piggy got broken leg

hi my piggy is 7myhs old he fell out of his caged as he was feeling a bit naughty with his brother bless him
I telephoned the vets in Cardiff pdsa and I took him down that day on the 19th nov to be checked over he was given an injection
and we had to go back the nxt morning on the 20th nov my poor piggy had to be operated on and he has pins in his leg (omg its not
very nice seeing your poor little piggy like this I'm a nervous wreck ive not had a ** night sleep for over 48 hrs as ive been so worried
but on the ** side he is drinking and eating and wobbling around bless him hes doing great for a piggy who is blind yes he was born blind
bless him and the vets at summer hill *** in newport said to me put him down well 7mths ive still got him.
I am a bit concerned thou as my piggy has had this operation about the pins in his poor leg I'm worried if he knocks his leg etc
has anyone had a piggy go though the same operation and how did you manage please and also setting up the guinea pig cage etc
so that he or she does not hurt there leg with pins in please help thank you
 
Your poor little one. Are the pins internally or does he have an external fixator on the outside (cage or pins on the outside of the leg)?

Bones with pins in are surprisingly strong (not that i was suggest testing it). He needs to be in a very confined area and no ramps or ledges for him for up to 12 weeks (depending on the advice from the vet too). Make sure he has some pain relief during the healing period too. I doubt he will do much damage to the pins which will be much stronger than his own bones providing he doesnt have ledges or ramps. I have seen dogs do damage to pinned legs but nothing tiny like a pig as they are not so crazy as dogs in putting strain on their legs.

If you need any other advice feel free to ask. Ive seen and nurse a lot of fixed legs before in many species.

hi there thanks for reply my poor piggy pins can been seen but there is black like putty on the inside and outside he is in no pain saying that he has not cried out
but I do know that piggys do not show pain bless them I have taken the ramp out of his cage and ive put pillow cases under neath newspaper as the pdsa said not to use woodchipings because of the dust I did phone the pdsa today as I panicked because I could see weeping on his leg but they advised me to keep an eye on it as we are due back down the pdsa in the morning and also the pins are in my piggy for up to 4-6 weeks depending on his recovery and how he is doing
 
Please keep your boy in a confined, flat area, so he cannot run around and do more damage until the leg is healing well. As he is blind, please use furnishings that he is used to and that smells "right" to compensate for the change in space. If he is very close to a seeing companion, please make sure that they can still interact through bars/grids/mesh.
Make sure that he has got pain relief, so he continues to eat well and be OK in himself. Your vet will have hopefully given him an injection at the time of the treatment, but that will wear off within 24 hours. Here is a link for how to recognise the signs of pain. Piggies are prey animals; they will hide any signs of weakness or pain to an astonishing degree.

Blind piggies can very much lead a normal, happy and fulfilled life; it is certainly not a reason to put a pet to sleep! I have a cataract piggies group who enjoy the same lifestyle as my other piggies, which includes roaming time on the living room floor (complete with mad dashes and popcorning) and trips to the lawn in warm, dry weather.

But there are some areas where blind piggies are clearly more at risk than seeing piggies, like falls and injuries where their lack of sight means that they can't avoid dangers or brace themselves for an impact. We can try our best to remove any potential obstacles and problems (like using only soft hay to prevent hay pokes), but we can never completely eliminate all risks. HUGS!

Did the accident happen in a hutch or on the ramp of an indoors cage? You haven't been very clear on the particulars. We can't really help you with improvements until we know that. hi wiebke my guinea has just come back frm the pdsa the vet is very pleased with him we are back now at the pdsa every week so the vet can keep an eye on him and hes in no pain he is eating plenty of food hay etc
he is still in close range of hearing his family yes he had an injection the day of his operation before I brought him home its been over 48 hrs now and he is doing fine
yes I have been on a panic all weekend but as the vet said I have to let him adapt to it
he is in a guinea pig cage and ive taken out the ramp and food bowels he is on newspaper with pillowcases underneath
and also with hs blindness he knows his bearings of his cage and whats in there ps I will also try and post picture of his cage where he had his accident
which I feel awwfull about
 
Lots of healing vibes to your piggie, I hope he recovers soon, I can't add to the excellent advice you have received above. Just wanted to send him my best wishes.
 
hi sport billy thank you so much for wishes and thoughts yer he is having lots of rest have made his cage a bit smaller so he is not moving around so far thank you
 
You nare doing the right things; just let him heal now.

If you can, let him have regular shared cuddle time on your lap with members of his family on the other side to his injury. Spearate whenever things get too lively. Is he neutered?
 
hi wiebke yes I will be given him lots of cuddles and also he will be seeing his other piggy family no he is not neutered at the mo
this was the cause of his accident he was feeling a bit naughty with his brother early hours of Thursday morning so I only took the ramp/undersleeping
thing out of the cage just turned my back for a few seconds and my poor piggy feel on the floor well I was heartbroken as he was limpin I could not stop crying
so I rang the pdsa and I got him looked at straight away I feel so terriable because I really blame myself for this happening to my poor piggy
but on the bright side he is doing ok bless him I love all my piggys and other pets ive got thank you

Hi just to say Lexie my guinea pig is coming on grt he is still active even thou he has pins inn his poor leg
I do have one concern the other day he was eating his own droppings which I don't know why
Just to let you know I'm back down the PDAs at 2pm today for Lexie to have a check up on how. His leg is

Glad that your piggie is getting on ok, i hope he has a quick and full recovery. And about him eating his droppings, piggies generally eat their poops as they get extra nutrients i believe from their poops, i see my girls doing it, it means they know what they need and i was happy to see my girls do it.
 
oh thank you for reply that's ** to know about droppings as I was concerned as ive never seen them do it b4 on the good side my guinea is doing great the pdsa vets are really pleased with his leg it is healing lovely back down nxt week for futher check up thank you for your kind wishes

hi just to let everyone know that lexie my guinea pig has been to the pdsa today for a check up on his leg the vet is very pleased and on the 19th of nov he is having his pin removed and also having an xray on his eyes as he has wetness coming out so I will keep you all informed on his progress and a big thank you to the ppl on the guinea pig forum for there surport
 
That's great news about his leg, he'll be running and popcorning about before you know it!

hi there just to let every one know lexie my guinea pig had his pins removed yesterday at the pdsa in Cardiff he was kept in over night due to him still being sedated I picked him
up this morning and he is home doing fine he is eating and going around just thought id let you know on the out come of his op yesterdayand a big thank you for your surport
and kind thoughts for my piggy
 
hi wiebke thank you lexie had an xray on his eyes there is nothing there bless him he is blind but it is so strange that his eye is weeping they have him on antibioitics for a week due to
an infection in his eye where he is scratching it but oh I'm so glad he is home I missed him so much and also his piggy family did they knew he was not around but I would like to thank you all for your surport and help x
 
Glad he is home, hopefully the AB's will clear the infection up. Please keep us updated on his progress.
 
thanks sport billy yes I will keep you informed lexie is back down the pdsa on Friday this week he is coming on really well since his pins have been removed
ive still kept his cage sectioned off so he only has a limited space enough room to get around I will increase making his cage a tiny bit bigger as the weeks comance
so its not to much pressure on his leg
 
hi piggy forum just to say a big thank you to everyone on here for there surport and wishes my lexie is coming on great he is back to himself in his normal sized cage running around eating and popcorning ive not put him back in with his brother yet as it is still earlydays but they are aving a run around and being frisky lol thank you all so much from lexie owner xx
