hi could you be kind enough to pass this on to your expert karen, i wasnt able to follow direct links to her for some reason?

my question is related to my guinea pig, rosie is female approx 11 months old. we have had her 10 months and almost straight away she would cry when pooping. at times her poop is very soft but not runny smells bad but not terrible and does not look black. other times they seem very big pellets that can be coated with blood. i have taken her to the vet many times and he is very helpful but admits he is not an expert with cavies and i cant find one in my area.

we feed rosie, dry pellets, she did have a museli type mix but we took her off that, she also eats hay with added dandelion and vitamin c. we feed her a small amout of 'wet' food each day, a piece of carrot, cucumber and some cabbage usually curly kale.

she sometimes gets a treat of piece of apple or grape.

we have tried feeding her only dry food but that didnt seem to make any difference.

the vet took xrays and ultrasound under anesthesia and found nothing apart from dark cloudy areas on her scan that he said were unusually high amounts of trapped air (wind/gas)

she seems very bloated when having these bad spells and crunches up when she poops and cries as though she is straining.

she still eats well and drinks well during these episodes and actualy still runs about and seems quite happy.

but i feel sad for her so i dont know what to do if there is anything else?

the vet has me give her baytril during these episodes 0.2 ml twice a day and i also give her a probiotic solution in her water.

what can i do to help her, have you ever seen tis problem before? am i doing something wrong?
i have another pig called boggle who is perfect and has never had any problems so i can only assume their diet is ok?

please help any advice is gratfully received.

thanks nicola evans and rosie the pig x

i know piggies are meant to have roughly one cup or veges per day per pig so maybe you not feeding enough,i cant really help on anything else and unfortunantly most of the members are in bed so you will have to wait a few hours for them to wake up,xxxxxxxxalso now meds or probiotics should be given in water because you cant know how much your piggy is getting x

do you think i could be not feeding them enough? my other piggie boggle is so fat! i do limit rosie wet food because i thought that might be the problem. i give her baytril in a syringe so i can measure it and the probiotic is a sachet into 50 ml of water so hopefully thats ok x

I'm sure a few of our lovely people online will help you once they wake up :)
I've only recently got my girls so i'm none the wiser on this problem........sorry i can't help.
We'll cross our paws and wish little Rosie all the very very best xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Welcome to the forum from us in OZ there's lots of great people on here that i'm sure will advise you the best way to deal with Rosie.
One thing i am aware tho it's usually 0.4ml baytril twice daily, i know the others will also advise this.
Perhaps you could tell us how much she weighs?

What you're describing sounds like 'irritable bowel'. Can you slowly eliminate the different vegetables, check on her condition over at least a week and then gradually reintroduce? Various foods can set off an irritable bowel, I wouldn't know which one would and I stress that you are feeding her the right stuff, it's just that she might be reacting to one of them.

People with irritable bowel get various things to help - are any of them ok for piggies? Too much wind, mild diarrohea and then constipation and huge poos which are difficult to get out - that does sound as though the signals in her gut are confused. Perhaps someone else will know something to give daily that will help...anyone?

Sorry I couldn't help further, poor little piggie, Sarah x

thank you all so much for taking the time to reply, irritable bowel does sound appropriate now you say it. i have tried taking her off all wet food andthen introducing but nothing seems to stand out and she goes through periods of eating all i give her and being fine for ages? i will weigh her now.... (oh she looked so cute sitting in my kitchen scales!) she weighs 2lb and 5 oz

If you give us your appox location, we may be able to recommend a good guinea vet in your area?

It could be diet related in that something you are feeding her is causing this. I would withdraw all fresh veg and introduce a small amount one at a time. This way, you may discover the veg that is causing the problem. It is more likely to be cabbage, kale or one of those types.

The blood in the stools is worrying though, perhaps if you can find a good exotics vet, they can perfom a fecal analysis. Also, 0.2ml of baytril would have been too low a dose and can in itself cause diahorrea.

Sorry. realised I posted much the same thing as Sarah!

Oh that's a terrific weight but do you know how much she has lost?

by the way there's still a few more of our folks still to wake up that can advise more :) i'm sure they'll be on later on in the day :)

Great suggestion Fi.........somebody can advise you a vet in your area!

I hope you get some good treatment from your vets & get the whole thing sorted out.:)

i must admit i havent weighed her before only because the vet has done it regular and said its ok but i confess i dont know what she always has weighed. at the start i had her poop analysed for parasites etc and that came back all ok. i am in eastbourne east sussex if anyone knows an expert near me, i will travel to a good one. x thanks again x
