My piggy Womble has been ill the last few days. I took her to the vets today and the vet said she had pneumonia.
He gave her some oxygen and antibiotics and pain relief. She is on a course of antibiotics baytril for 7 days.
She is still eating a bit.
I am worried incase my other 3 piggys catch it. Can they catch it.
Is it best to put her in a separate cage for a few days.
Or should I put her back with the other 3.

I don’t know, but get well soon wee Womble 🥰

Hi

Please step in with feeding support asap. The need to breathe comes before the need to drink and only thirdly the need to eat; that is why a serious respiratory infection is always connected with loss of appetite.
Please also keep in mind that that over three quarters of what a piggy is eating in a day is hay/grass fibre, which you cannot judge by eye only - and it is that which you need to supplement with your feeding support. Your home support care is as important to keep up the fighting strength as any medication.

Please step in with syringe feeding and watering support and switch from the normal weekly weigh-in on your kitchen scales to weighing ideally first thing in the morning for best day-to-day comparison in order to provide the appropriate support level for the coming day. Keep in mind that the poo output is running 1-2 days behind the intake since one run through the gut takes about 24 hours and piggies do have two runs with some of their poos.

See whether a bowl of steaming water next to cage can help to ease the breathing.

Unless specifically asked by your vet, please leave your piggy with their companion but make sure that you keep them warm.
In most cases (unless you are very unlucky to have picked up one of the real nasties) a standard bacterial pneumonia can be fended off with a healthy immune system. Exposure and infection will have happened several days ago already, so if any companions are not showing any symptoms then they are unlikely to be affected by now.

Wishing your poorly piggy all the best!

Sending loads of healing vibes to Womble, hope you are better soon x

Poor Womble. I hope that the meds soon kick in. I agree completely with Wiebke’s advice about syringe feeding to support her.

Unfortunately despite all my best efforts. Womble died on Thursday 😢😢 I am devastated. I have 3 other Piggies. They all seem so depressed and quiet. They are still eating and drinking. But they are just sitting there looking really depressed. Womble was such a huge part of there lives and mine. She was like the boss, she had such a huge personality. I miss her so much 😢😢

I am so sorry you lost Wimbledon, she’ll leave such a deep loss to all of you as she sounds like the herd leader, sending hugs

Sleep tight Womble 🌈

I am so sorry to see your sad news. You did absolutely all you could for her, please be kind to yourself while you are grieving. The other's will pick up soon, I have noticed my piggies grieve for a few days but they seem to get over a loss much more quickly than we do.

Oh I’m so sorry to hear that. Popcorn high at the bridge Womble. Take care ❤️

I am so very sorry to read your update. You did everything you could for her. Sleep tight Womble. Big hugs x

So sorry for your loss.
You did everything possible for Womble and filled her life with love and care.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve.

Sorry for your loss  I'm with you in spirit, my sow Winnie died this morning. It's hard when our best efforts can't pull them through and the call of the bridge is too strong, but she knew how much you loved her. I hope the rest of your herd pick up soon.

Sleep tight Womble x 🌈

Awwww. So sorry. Yes It's not easy especially seeing them suffering and there is nothing you can do to help them. I tried everything, but it wasn't enough 😢 The other 3 seem a bit better today.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. It's not easy saying goodbye. Womble was only 2.5 😢 she was such a lovely girl, she was my little diva she had such a huge personality, she was always making me laugh. The other 3 seem a bit better today. So that's really good

Thank you ❤️ They are a bit brighter today, they are all sitting together eating hay, which is really good
