Hi all my beautiful boy Derek has heart failure and pneumonia has anyone else's piggy had this and did they recover?the vet said that it's not looking good for my boy but I wanted to know if there is any glimmer of hope that he will be ok x

HUGS

I am very sorry; piggies whose immune system/body function is impaired are unfortunately more liable to develop secondary problems.
It is very tough when you come to the sharp edge whether it is your piggies or the old generation in your family who are often facing similar issues. :(

I suppose that Derek is already on diuretics? What antibiotic has he been put on?

I had an old boar that had pneumonia and survived to live another 2 years after it. He had to be kept in for two nights at the vets i used back then, and given oxygen to help him breathe and antibiotics. This was after he had survived two cases of a uri and a severe case of bloat. There is hope, but i dont know about heart problems I'm sorry. Fingers crossed for your little one

Thank you he's on metacam, baytril and bisolvon he's not moving at all just laying on his side and has alot of discharge from his nose x

This doesn't sound good. I really think it may be time to help him over the Rainbow Bridge, sadly. I would get him to a vet, as they could pop him on oxygen for a while to see if that helps, but in my experience they don't come back when they're at this stage. Sorry it's not a more positive post.

If his system is already shutting down there is very little you can do. Laying on his side with profuse nasal discharge is extremely worrying and he needs to be at the vets urgently, wether that's for attempted treatment or to end his suffering.

I'm really sorry xx

Thank you I did say to the vet that would it be kinder to Derek if he went to sleep , the vet said that he wants to try and help Derek but I think I'm gonna take him back once the kids get to say goodbye I'm just so gutted for him x

It's so very sad, but it is the last act of love that we can show our pets. Sending hugs x

Thank you for adding the details.

Unfortunately, I agree with Debbie that Derek is on his way to the Rianbow Bridge.

You may find this new guide here helpful. The last chapter deals with piggies going into organ failure. Emergency and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

I am very sorry; it always comes as a gut wrenching realisation. :(

I'm gonna help him over the rainbow bridge I've called the vet and I've gotta take him at 5pm I have to do what's best for him thank you all for your kind words xx

Just keep an eye on him; keep him comfy and warm but not hot (warm a snugglesafe to half the maximum time) and follow the tips in the link I have given you. It covers all aspects when looking after a very ill/dying piggy until a vet appointment.

HUGS!

I am really sorry and agree with all the advice you received above. Sometimes no matter what we do we can’t save them. Often euthanasia is the last act of love we can have a make for Our pets, I know it’s really hard and I’ve been down this path many times over the years. Massive hugs to you and love to Derek. So sorry to read this today.
Helping over the Rainbow Bridge is the hardest choice to make but one we make out of love.
You will all need to be gentle with yourselves and allow time to grieve.
