Well my poppy's eyes were black but now there have turned to white.

But poppy has/had a sister called ruby who had red eyes but turned white ruby is now at the rainbow birdge. Poppy is other wise fine she is eating fine going to the toilet fine and is her noramlly self. As was ruby

ruby and poppy are full sisters there have the same mum and dad so whatever it I'm thinking its somthing in there genes. there is also another girl and boy from the same litter. and also 4 boys from another litter who also have same mum and dad as ruby and poppy. my warries is that there will all get it.

I dont know if ruby died from this or not I'm not sure why ruby died but she was the winker one of them all.

I did take ruby to the vets he liked at her etc for 15min he didnt know what was wrong with her. He is a great vet and knows lots about guinea pigs etc and has had hes own. he said he never seen a guinea pig whith white eyes.

All my pigges hutchs are lined with newspaper and farm hay. There eat wagg guinea pig crunch. There eat all sorts of diffrent fruit and veg

I'm very warried now with poppy being the senced guinea pig of mine to white eyes now.

Any help or infomation will be great and I'm willing to try anything to get to the bottom of it really if you would to see some picture of poppy i will get you some if you like to see her eyes

Hannah

can that be treated will poppys sister and 5 bothers allso get it (all have same mum and dad)

No, but the pigs are not bothered by cataracts, eyesight is not their best sense in any case,

how long will she live with it?

My rubys eyes went white in october 08 and died in jan 09

so theres no point in taking her to vets then?

Sorry to read about your worry with Poppy.

I haven't had experience of a piggy whose eyes turned white. I have a blind piggy whose eyes are white, or nearly white, and also had a problem with Ant and Dec, my little babies, whose eyelashes turned on to their eyeballs causing whiteness of the eyeball and a sticky discharge although temporarily ... they are fine now.

Guinea pigs don't rely on their eyesight too much and cope very well with limited vision. They rely mainly on their sense of smell and hearing.

Cataracts could be the problem. Please post some photos if you can.

ill try and get some tormow the piggies have all been put to bed now. I know she is not blind as i can see that she see

Both dogs and cats get cataracts (as well as humans!) I shouldn't think it bothers her too much. I don't think there is a treatment for it, in humans they can have an operation but it would be silly to do this with a guinea, they are too small. She probably is either blind or has limited vision.

i dont think she is blind i had her out this moring and she was her nomrally self

so do you think her sister and 5 bothers will get it as well?

I don't think you'd be able to say they will or they won't Hannah, it could be genetic or just a coincidence. I also don't think cataracts (if this is what's wrong with the eyes) would have caused Ruby's death.

Agreed - cataracts do not cause death - I have a wee girl here in rescue with a cataract eye and she is great otherwise..... (you can see the white in her eye on the attached picture).

Hope this helps a bit.

hi yeah my poppies eyes look like that

so she wont die from having cataracts then?

And i dont really know what ruby died of but she has allways been weeker then the other guinea pigs it was touch and go for the ifrst week with ruby is she would make it or not

Hi
Just for the record, i had a piggie who lived for about 3 years with cataracts and she seemed perfectly happy. I also had a rabbit as a kid who had cataracts and he used to bump into your feet if he was running past - but otherwise he was fine too !

I think Ruby maybe died from something else. I have had a couple of my piggies over the years who have seemed fine and then just died. I believe (someone will correct me, if i am wrong) they have quite weak hearts, so maybe her heart just stopped beating. We could spend our lives wondering why our piggies die - and sometimes there is just no answer.

All the best
Rach

well accading to my mum ruby had a week haret as i say she was very very very small when she was born and her first week we didnt know if she would make it but she did she didnt like the hot weather or the cold weather she speent most of her life hiding from the sun or the cold

Piggies can have heart problems - congestive heart failure is the most common, and I *think* pigs also have heart attacks, but anything can go wrong really. Heart conditions can usually be treated; Enalapril or Fortekor are the usual medicines of choice, doses given daily or twice daily.
What were Ruby's symptoms before she died?

ruby was fine before she died only thing was her eyes were white insted if red which happoed a few months before she died

she was eating and going to the toilet fine.

as i say she didnt like the sun so in summer she would be hind under hay or a house thing and in the winter she didnt like the cold so he did the same. she was enver cold she was allways very warm

as i say she was weeker then her borther and sisters

We have 2 piggies with sight problems - as it was unusual to have 2 with the problem I took Scruffy to the vets who consulted a sight-specialist, and there is an infection that can cause this - its worth taking your piggy to the vets and getting the medecine as the infection can spread to other piggies and also to rabbits. Its a simple treatment, you can put it in their water or syringe it inot them if they are not big drinkers.
Unfortunately it has not cured Scruffy whose eyes are very cloudy now, but Tiger's eyes have not got any worse, and sometimes I think they have actually improved.

Good luck!

Poppys eyes are still the same there havent got any wrose or any better.

Poppy is still a happy smily guinea pig and is eating well

but I'm off to vet tromow as having thier nails cuts so going to ask about her catracts tormow
