Dickie is a lovely chocolate with ginger bits rescue who lives with his young brother from a second litter. They get on great - never even a nose push. They live outside in a run with a little cover house for sleeping.

Dickie is loosing weight despite eating and drinking normally. I wonder if its renal failer?

Also, I`ve noticed his testicles are very large. No discoloration and both are the same size. His brothers` testicles from the same litter (but separated) are not nearly so large.

I`m taking him to the vets tomorrow for blood tests and advice.

If you look at the post about Lennie losing weight MaryH talks a bit about renal failure. I'm sorry I can't offer any advice. I hope Dickie is feeing better soon xx

Thanx. I had already read that post - a very sad story. I`ll ask for a blood test.

I forgot to ad that Dickie is only 7 months old - give or take a few weeks either way because he part of a rescued family - mum plus three males and two females.

Also, some fur is thinning where he is scratching. I`ve looked for mites but cant see any. His movements are normal and he seems cheerful enough.

I`ll bring both boars (Dickie and Black Beauty) into the house every night in case it gets cold and I`ll put them back into their usual home outside every morning.

Possibly the reason he is losing weight.
I`ve looked for mites but cant see any.

'Mites' are not visible to the naked eye, they burrow under the skin (the old word for it was 'rat mange' ) Lice are the visible beasties.
Good luck at the vet.

As Juniper said, mites aren't visible, and before mites get fully going with the scabbing and open wounds etc, often the skin will be flakey and itchy for the pig. See what the vet says but they might suggest treating for mites just in case (ivermectin is the only thing that works)

If it definately isn't mites it could be the start of a fungal infection, good luck with the vets :)

Thanx all for your info above. I`ll let you know what happens at vets.

Anders.

Sorry i've been off line now for over 24hrs >:( combo of day off and not being on at home :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:
awwwwwwww Dickie so sorry to hear about this :'( :'( :'( :'(
We're hoping that the vets appointment finds the solution to your weight loss ?
Sending you heaps and heaps of loves and cuddles and wheeeeks to help you get better real real sooooon :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Awww, thanx Glynis :-*

Its mites so Dickie is on Genitrix. Also his brother - Black Beauty (cos they cuddle up at night) is on the same treatment.

Weight loss might be due to the mites so when they are killed off Dickie should gain weight. ;)
