I'm sad and missing my lovely boar Rupert. I only got him yesterday I adopted him from the adoption centre of the set shop as they were saying he was unable to get on with others as he was territorial. I asked if he had been neutered and tried with girls but the answer was no. So I scooped him up and took him home. He's 6months and has a lovely temperament. He's very handsome too lol. I took him to vets today for neutering so he can be bonded with my girls of which there are 5 so I'm hoping well find a combination that works. Anyway the vet called me this afternoon to say he was eating but hadn't done a poo so could they keep him overnight. I've never wished for a guinea to poo in my life but boy am I wishing now! I'm sure he'll be fine but you can't help but feel sad thinking of him all on his own business the vets

I hope everything goes OK with Rupert - he is having to go through quite a lot of changes just now in his life which must be hard for a small young animal to cope with.

Oh bless him, he's been through so much in the last 24 hours, but has a bright future ahead. Fingers crossed for a poo.

Thanks guys. If has been through a lot all of which I inflicted on him but it was for the best intentions and I'm sure he'll be grateful when he doesn't have to live on his own anymore (fingers crossed). I've got him lots of new toys for his return and a cage made up ready for him with lots of warm fleece and cosy cups etc to make him feel better

Thanks everyone, This morning I am seriously regretting my actions. I have had a couple of neutered boys in the past with no problems. I wasn't told of any risks so thought it would work out fine. I have called them this morning and they have said he is eating but not pooing enough? I really want to go down there and see him and count the poos for myself! but I did ring round all the vets in local area and found a specialist (as my last vet who did my other boys no longer works at the vets I used to use and now it is a dog and cat place). Its an expensive vets which I have used before but it is 15 miles away so a bit of a pain to just pop in. I'm sure they are doing the right thing keeping him until they know he is ok but I'm just worried sick about him! I've to ring back at 2pm. If they say he's still not pooing I will have to go down there with the best veg and hay in the world to tempt him and some lovely dried dandelion and plantain!

My local vet who is very good with guinea pigs always keeps piggies who've been neutered in till the following afternoon. My local rescue put me on to them & there's never been any problems due to this extra care.

The dried dandelion should help plus plenty of mixed veggies. Hope Rupert can go home today.

Thanks that's reassured me a little, it is good they are taking his care very seriously and not risking sending him home until they are sure he's OK

I think its re assuring they are keeping him till they poo. Really hope he poo's soon and he can come home and i hope the veg etc dose the trick.

He has done poos just not enough? In my experience they poo tons so not sure why he's not doing loads?

Aw yay. Am very pleased he is home. Hope he is comfy. Did they give him any pain meds etc? Sending gentle chin rubs his way x

Good news that he is home! And good on the vet to make sure first that he was OK before he was sent home!

I hope that he has a smooth recovery from now.

I am pleased to hear Rupert is home.

Out of interest, which vets do you use? Don't get me wrong, I am happy with my own vets but am always on the look out for more specialist vets if I ever need one. I currently have a list that I am adding too.

I notice you are in Preston which is just an hour from me.

yes he is on metacam he had it yesterday and today and I have been given some to give to him for another 3 days

It's a vet in Lytham St Annes called the Vetanery Health centre, they specialise in small animals, birds and exotics.

The thing that confused me though is that they gave me baytril? I didn't think until afterwards its an antibiotic I wonder if it was something to do with him not pooing?

The Baytril will be to prevent any infection. Was you given a probiotic as well? If not, ask your local vet to prescribe you with some or you can order online.

Baytril can sometimes kill off good bacteria in the gut and cause soft poos and a probiotic will just help prevent this from happening.

or you can buy a probiotic from.pets at home...cant remember the name (am at work atm) but when i gt home will post the name. Was about 7pound for a large tub and always works well when mine are on antibiotics.

Glad he is home.

I think ProC is the one you are thinking about from Pets at Home?
