My Self Black Guineas Going Grey!

Yep - they can go lighter when they get older - my black boar started to turn greyish.

Awww. Yep, they can get grey/white hairs. I found the first one recently on my current black piggy who is 3 years old.

Some piggies discolour as adults. Dark ones can go lighter, light ones can go darker or duller; ginger piggies can go dun. Black or white hairs can appear. It doesn't happen to every piggy, but generally their colours tend to fade somewhat with age.

Wait, seriously? Is there a certain age on that? Because tbh it looks like Comet's going lighter on his body (not so much) his face already, but he's only about 8 months old.

That is not aging - this is just the baby hair crowing out. Babies have the darkest and most intensive colours. As that is growing out, the hair is getting overall lighter. The effect is even more dramatic in long-haired guinea pigs.

My all black piggy Angus is getting lighter too and he's not 1 yet. It's as if the hair underneath the top 'layer' of hair is paler if that makes any sense. Like when you pull his hair back you can see the lighter hair. Sometimes when I take pics it makes him look like he has bald patches, which he most certainly doesn't - although judging by the amount of hair on the fleece, he should be bald! :lol!: Nice to know that it's normal.

You can just about tell on my pic of Smokey, he was jet black when I first got him. His pic is of him around 2 years old and he went all grey too. Still incredibly cute tho x

Blitzen's been turning more of a dark steel grey than black but I was expecting it with him. Comet, not so much. I honestly thought I was seeing things when I first saw it :P

I have also noticed Ginny's getting white hair in the black parts of his coat, though it probably started a while ago and didn't take note lol. It's still quite nice and shiny for his age though

Some pigs seem to fade out or change color as they get older. Sundae was lilac on her face, white and buff on her body, and over time the lilac faded from very grey to almost white by the time she was elderly. The black based colors (black, lilac, etc.) have faded more on my pigs than the red colors, for whatever reason.

I thought I was imagining it, but my Ginger Ginny seems to be getting lighter. She also looks grey around her nose. She is nearly one and I thought I was going mad. Glad to hear it is possible

It's fascinating how their colours change. Mabel came to live with us as a baby. She was registered at the vets as a cream crested but she's grown more lilac with a bit of cream colouring as she's grown older.
