With the hot weather today, and having been reading up on the tips for keeping guineas cool, I took two ice blocks (the ones that go in cool boxes) put them end to end and wrapped them in a towel, then laid it in the run. I figured they could all lay up against it and keep cool.

Well, they sniffed all round it then kept on and on at it, biting the towel, drawing up little stringy bits with their teeth, and generally just pulling the towel until they unwrapped the blocks altogether ;D ;D I think they thought I'd given them a pressie.

Once unwrapped they left it well alone and sat on the towel!

Shall I try again another time? Do other people find this works?

I made them ice lollies yesterday and put them in their runs today they loved it sat by it licked it and then Tilly put her bum on it bless her she has such long hair I think she was really hot ;D

they probably weren't hot enough to use them, they definatly will when they are too hot.
I decided to wrap them in some newspaper this year instead of a towel, as it helps insulate, and will slow down the melting process. it worked well, i froze those plastic take away dishes, the chinese have been using recently, wrapped them up, and Charlie was laying on top of it. (that was the other day) weather here in the south has been rubbish today.

Been baking here they have been so hot they havent been able to move just lie in the shade bless them!

Hmm I tried the frozen bottles in a tea towel the other day as well and they werent all that interested, though they were indoors. Can't wait to get them out in the sun on the grass in a couple of weeks

I'm in the south too and it's been roasting here - I'm between Bournemouth and Southampton, where are you then? ;D

South East, Ipswich Suffolk, been cloudy all day, and not gonna improve this week ahead either. Although one web site says rain Tues, wed, thurs, frid, but warm, the other website says cloudy and warm?? Only time will tell i suppose

yes Gingerpig its been baking here today and I'm not far from you on the IOW but sea mist must be bad all we've heard all day is fog horns

I tend to freeze bottles of water and put that in the hutches and runs when it gets VERY hot - usually find the girls tend to lie near them and if I put one in the bedroom area, its like air con in there after a while! ;D ;D

Do you wrap them in anything?

Stick with it and wrapping in towels is a good idea - don't want them to "burn" themselves on the frozen bottle/block! It took mine a while to get used to having something new in the run/hutches but they soon learnt and as you may have seen on a similar thread a couple of my guys have found ways of "customising" their bottle coolers! ;D For those that didn't see the earlier photos here they are again!

Oh those pics are brilliant I love the first one lol ;D ;D ;D

Hahaha ;D ;D Thanks for posting those pics, fantastic! The one laying over the bottle looks just like my Rosie!

I shall persevere

is it me or does everyones piggy pull at a thread on towels until they nearly fall over backwards? lol

Great pigtures!  :D
I'm going to persevere too... tried it last year when it was hot but they werent interested - so just stuck with using a fan.

Yep... mine do this sometimes too! Usually when they want to go back in their cage to have a little tinkle!  ;D Or if they are just seeing if its edible!

I don't think my Guinea pigs are as adventurous as yours - I don't think they'd lie on that if I gave it to them!

But it's still a brilliant idea, and when the weather is nice, I'm definitely going to start doing that!

When it's very hot, they seem to slump on the edges of their run and rest their heads!

=]

The picture cracks me up! If it is that hot though, should we even put them outside? I set up the playpen inside with a waterproof tablecloth underneath, and I put their blanket over that for them to be on while in the playpen. I had always heard to be very careful with extreme temps., so I only take them out in mild, breezy weather....

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
That's a classic pic, i soooo love the slumped over the water bottle trick, too much carrot wine perhaps? ;D ;D ;D ;D

yeah wot is it with piggies and towels? they seem to have a who can get the longest thread going competition ;D ;D
I put mine in a couple of pillow cases now, they don't seem to bother trying to bite them.
also I've put some reflective sheets on my shed roof, they are brilliant, it has cut the temp inside right down, they are the reflective sun bathing mats you can get, I got mine from a discount shop for £2 each
