Hi i'm not sure if i'm posting this in the right section and it's a bit embarrising but here goes...
i've got a problem i've had my piggies in the house for ages now and never had any problems with them smelling at all....... that is untill about 2 weeks ago i came home and noticed a really yucky smell all through the house i'm not doing anything different hubby rekons that it could be something i'm feeding them ;D What do you think?
at the moment i'm thoughly cleaning them out and disinfecting their cages every day u cant smell anything on the piggies themselves or when you go close to their cage but i'm sure it's coming from them, do you think they could have a lot of wind or something? sorry it's so long i'm really losing the plot i think! :D :D
Does anyone have any ideas? hubby says they'll be moving to the shed if we cant sort it out :'( :'(

are they boys? mine have started making lurve to their vet bed and it smells very "masculine".... lol

I noticed when I hd my girls in the house there was no smell then I addopted 2 boys and they stank so ive converted the shed and they now ll live in there :)

My piggie room started smelling a bit worse when i got my boar, but often its the food that smells. Have you fed broccoli or cabbage? That can get a bit smelly through the day lol x

Guinea pigs don't smell if you clean them regularly, I have 7 boys in one room that get cleaned out completely every night and every morning I change the top layer of newspaper and there is no smell, they all have floor time every night ( seperately) of which I change the towels I put down in between each ones floortime.

Are you sure no-one has a urine infection? this can sometimes make them smell. Other than that it may be down to cleaning the cage a bit more, foods don't tend to make them more smelly, but leaving something in the cage all day ( i.e cabbage leaves, broccoli) may smell.

I also have 7 boars in one room and the only time it smells a bit is when one of them `scents`the floor during floor time because they can smell where another boar has been. It smells like the worst cheesy socks ;D The smell doesn`t last though.
The veg that smells the worst is cauliflower leaves, if you leave that in the cage it stinks!
I do bath my boars about every 6-8 weeks and clean their scent gland with swarfega before bathing them in GG shampoo. I use newspaper, aubiose and hay. I find the aubiose brilliant for absorbing urine and their cages dont smell at all :)

Hark at us LJ "7 boys"! :o

I use Russell Rabbit Bedding to absorb pee !

I know, 14 between us, Lord! I have 3 sons as well, so it is testosterone central round here! Did you read what I had to do on Sat night Sue? Teddy got over excited on Larry`s head ;D

x8) x8) I clean them out and completly disinfect the cages every night and change the bedding and 'wee' corners every morning.
I've read somewhere the when males get to a certain age the smell more because of something like a puberty could it be this? I've had no problems at all till now 2 of my boys are about 4 months old now! :)

They are at the age now where one or the other is going to be top pig, so they could be scenting, which does pong I must admit!
It will pass though :)

;D how would you describe the smell? i'm having trouble i hope it is this i really don't want to have to move them! :(

I haven't noticed it with my pair who are now just over a year, but Bully does have a whiff to him sometimes if he's been out, but once you put them in their clean cage it seems to evapourate.

The smell is putrid!

The first time I smelt it was just after I got Timmy as a baby to bond with Lennie. I was hunting all over for what I thought was a putrid smelly sock, I was really confused until I realised what it was ;D

You could try covering up the smell with incense sticks burning or a candle or something like that so you OH doesn`t notice ;D

;D ;D ;D yeah i might try that! i just can't belive 2 piggies could cause such a smell! :P
