anyways thr was this coupl who com to buy 2 guina pigs an thr whr asking lots of qstions tc anyways th lat who was srving thm sai to thm that bcous thr only 6 to 8 wks ol that thr havnt ha any vggis yt

Similar story to that of my friend who went and bought two pigs from there. She was told (and I quote) "don't bother feeding them for two or three days because they'll be too scared to eat anyway". Lovely.
 
i think my piggs would be sacred if i didnt fed them veggies for a day
 
i really dislike pets at home, me and my partner went in the other day and the guinea pigs olny had pellet food. Thing is my baby ones are only 8 days old yet they are eating veg now and have no problems with it at all.

We had a look around and i dont mean to sound ridiculous but the prices on the animals! £19 for a guinea pig or 2 for £35? to me that is just plain unfair as not many people would pay this amount imo. They had males and females in the same cages and this one poor rabbit. It was a giant breed, all black cooped up alone in a cage...£150?! ridiculous. thye were asking that price for a rabbit to go to a good home but still, pets at home are pathetic imo.

There is Vitamin C in the pelleted food, plus they have a supplement in the water which contains Vitamin C ;)

I would agree with that. It's more water than anything else, and very few nutrients - a bit like iceberg lettuce. Might as well give them the equivalent volume in harder veggies, and they'll get a few more nutrients out of it ;)

This is always argued, in both ways. Some people claim that P@H don't charge enough for animals, encouraging 'impulse purchases', then others claim that they charge too much. So I guess it depends on where people stand on the matter. ;)

I personally wouldn't say it's ridiculous, as the rabbit is also neutered. Plus at this sort of price, it should hopefully prevent anybody buying on impulse!

hmm i just thought wouldnt it be alot better for the animal to be living with another of its kind instead of kept in a small indoor only cage?

suppose prices do vary. in the local pet shop they are £9 a cavie and £11 in another but i suppose its all on the seller. our local pet shop puts the males and females in tiny glass containers. pets at home do the same but in a larger one.

God, that's scary.

I admit that Fry and Laurie didn't touch any food for a few days, but Yuki and Baby started eating right away (like ninjas), cucumber vanishes in a second and they're eating plenty of dry food and drinking, so.. That's ridiculous advice to give. D: All piggies react differently.
 
They have to eat... when we first get them they probably eat when we arent looking... wilson and cindy were doggin' out lol
 
I agree with neep neep here,
Guinea Pig pellets have vit C in them, and also they probably put drops in the water. Every P@H i go into they get their veggies in the morning, so maybe this member of staff hadn't been there very long and didn't know they got veggies! Plus you don't have to have an animal qualification to work there, so maybe they just don't know much about guineas.

and would you prefer the giant house rabbit to be sold at £10? or £150 to stop people buying them on impulse?
 
I went in P@H this afternoon (not buying anything, just looking around)..thought it was better than it usually is when I go in..the pens were clean, and they had food..no hay though as usual. (I've never ever seen hay in my local pets at home's rabbit/pig pens) Some rabbits were in one of the places they usually have birds (there was no birds in there)..there was only two or three I think and it was nice and big with loads of places to hide etc, so that was a nice suprise. Oh and I made friend with a rat. ::) I put my finger near "it" to let "it" have a sniff and it put it's paws on my hand and licked me..wish I'd have taken a photo of dads face...he said to me "read the sign. it says don't stick your fingers in because when they're stressed they will bite"..I just stared back at him, the rattie was lovely.

Unbelievable. They obviously know nothing about guinea pigs. Even if they don't eat, they should have the food available to them. P@H sounds awful. It's one of those places that no one likes, but shops there because it's convenient and easy. People say they're so smart and they're really stupid.

The same as one by us.

Hubby and my dad get their fishy stuff from there, also we were in need of nuggets on Thursday just gone.

No more birds in the aviary parts, just the piggies and sometimes a bunny in with them. Was about 11-30 and they had just cleaned them out, put new shavings down, hay in their racks, some more pellets and a small bowl of veggies.

Also a couple of those pigloo things :)

Quite a difference from when I have been in :)
 
tbh i dont think it matters how much they are, people buy horses which cost loads more and still they get neglected. so if the rabbit was to sell for £10 or £150 its the person who buys it that matters. Just hopefully IF anyone buys him he will be housed alot better than he was in pets at home.
 
We just found our local P@H! Anyway at first I was quite impressed as they had 4 pens with bunnies in them and no piggies.... until we go to the back of the store and there were 2 guineapig pens, but each pen had 1 big white rabbit in it... why weren't these rabbits in with the others? Anyway one of the piggies was chasing all the others round, biting them and trying to mount them, so we told one of the staff and she took him out.. don't know what she did with him, she asked us if we would like to take him but as we are hopefully getting our rescue pig on Wednesday we had to say no... Its also the first time we've seen Timothy Hay - heard so much about it so we got some - they all love it! The rabbits dropped everything and scoffed the lot, and Tiger has had his hay rack filled twice! Think we will be buying more if it!

So apart from the 2 rabbits in the pig pens, all the pens were very clean .. and the girl that removed the naughty piggie seemed to genuinly like the animals as she was gentle with them. Will keep my eye out next time!

thats exactly the same price in our new store on the Isle of wight, went in again today to check alls still well and believe it or not everything is fine except the prices, Carrie anne had her eye on the lemon agoutis but i said no lets get our shed settled down I'm still too nervous opening up still after losing 5 recently and £35 was way too much for 2 I'm hoping we have the new look store opened here because its definatly nothing like your ones on the mainland, am going to be keeping a close eye on it though dont want standards to drop do we?
 
I personally, do not mind the prices. I think by charging £35 for 2, at least they are too expensive to be an impulse purchase. The only thing I don't like about the prices is it means there is profit in the pigs which means they will keep selling them (and I am against all pet shops selling livestock of any sort). My local independant pet shop sells piggys for £48 per pair (she will not sell them as singles) so are even more expensive. Harrods sell guinea pigs too - can't remember the price of them but I know the rabbits were at least £50 each!

I am all for voting with your feet though - if you do like the conditions inside a store then don't give them your money. Try and find somewhere else to shop. I know it isn't always easy - especially if where you live there is little choice - but it is the best way to show that you are not supporting them.
 
wow i did'nt know "Arrods" sold piggys , while i would not buy a pig from PAH some of their other items are pretty good they did sell probiotic powder which most smaller pet shops dont sell, fiddle stix and stuff for my dog and parrot, so all the time they keep it animal friendly and nothing is wrong with their conditions I will still buy odds and sods from them, still cannot believe the rabbits had an on suite room to run about in carrie anne thought it was wonderful, buns and pigs were all seperate sows one side and boars the other, I honestly could find no fault, and am hoping all PAH will be the same soon,

I have to be honest, I can not find fault with my local P@H either (well, saying that, haven't been in there in a very long time). Piggys and rabbits have always been seperated and always seemed healthy enough - from what you can see just by looking.

Harrods sell puppies and kittens as well. Also have a huge range of parrots and exotic pets as well as rabbits and piggys. Don't agree with it on principle but they are well looked after and OMG are they expensive! No chance of the average person doing an impulse buy in there. Have to be honest, don't like Harrods either - not just because I don't agree with selling animals but also because they sell real fur >:( . That is a different discussion though ;)
 
I always give my guineas cucumber especially in the summer as its full of water, in fact in the summer its their main source of greens, And not a sloppy jelly bean in sight ;D and like you Hannah my babies have access to greens from the word go because the Mum needs the greens so the babies have it as well, and if the breeder who sold the babies to pets at home is a responsible for the guineas health they would be offering greens, Its pets at home being to bl**dy lazy to care for there animals proply :tickedoff:

Th P@H that I look in still have rabbits and piggies in together and their fed on rabbit pellets! I thought things were supposed to be slowly improving in all stores, but there doesn't seem to be an acceptable standard at all of them.

I have had alot of issues in the past with p@h but went in today for a few bits for my puppy I'm getting soon, and yea at last things are looking up for my local p@h :) all of the piggies were separated from the rabbits and had lots of hay, piggloos, clean water and i even saw a little bit of left overs of a veggie breakfast ;D looks like all of the people who have emailed p@h have done a good job i hope they will all be like this soon. Lets just hope staff have had lessons in sexing animals as well but i was happy with what i saw today i hope they keep it up.

Did you ask which food they were on? As the guinea pig and rabbit pellets look very similar. They should be on the guinea pig nuggets.

With regards to the store who said that they didn't give the rabbits and guineas veg....which store is it? Because the company guidelines are to feed the rabbits and guineas fresh veg daily. Please either let me know or complain to the store manager....otherwise nothing will get done.
 
Personally i think P@H is Way way too expensive i went in to look around and saw in with the finches a rope toy and thought that would be good for my finches found it £10 all it was was a piece of rope with some wire in it to shape it outrageous. (This was before i got my guinea's)
