Hi Everyone

Well I'm approaching my 2nd weekend of having my trio. The last few days I've noticed the biggest change in them. They're getting far more confident & far more vocal! The handling is still going very slowly but it's going in the right direction.

The most rewarding thing is seeing Teddy run about. Previously they were kept in a very small hutch & A neighbour told me in the 3 years she'd been living next to the previous owner she never seen them out of the hutch. First of all when I introduced them into their new environment Teddy would only use a very small space, shuffling about as if she was still in the boundaries of the small hutch. Ziggy & Duke loved the space straight away & now Teddy does too:) She runs round & round in big circles, leaps over food bowls. Loves moving things about & rearranging. It's great to see!

My outdoor run still hasn't arrived! Weathers horrible so it's not important this now. I'm always unlucky when it comes to deliveries, things are always late or the wrong thing gets delivered

It sounds like they are blossoming in their new space, so well done for taking them on.
 
Thank you:) I love animals but in all honesty I'd never even considered Guinea Pigs as pets before. That's why I was uncertain of everything in my 1st few days, I wasn't sure if they were right for me or more importantly that I was the right person for them. I just knew I couldn't leave them in the situation they were in. Now I'm like 'where have you been all my life!' & I think they like me too!

That is great! Its sounds like you are taking care of them very well. Don't worry about the handling, my sister's pig won't even let her touch her after 3 weeks!(lol) You are doing wonderful!:D

Thank you:) I think if I was more confident in handling them it would happen a lot quicker but I'm nervous of hurting them. I'm not used to handling small animals, I'll get there though. I see all the photos of lap time on here and think awwww I can't wait for that to happen. I'm sure your sister is the same with her pig.
 
When I had mine, I was really nervous. When your ready, if you have a hidy-house with a bottom, you could scoop the house up when he/she goes in it. place it on your lap, and there you go! Its a great way for first time owners! :)
 
I'm going to Pets At Home tomorrow, so I'll buy one & give it a go. They look really cosy & comfy. Thanks for the advice:)
 
I put the carry box in the run and gradually remove the other hideys. The pigs take themselves into the box, and I find it's a much quieter process getting them out of the carry box for handling. There isn't a chase so their adrenalin doesn't rise. Also, if you take slow breaths as you handle them it will keep you calmer, the pigs will notice, believe me!
 
That's what I've been doing & it's such a stress free method, for them & me! I've picked Teddy up a few times now so my confidence is growing. Still just stroking Duke & Ziggy. Yesterday though I was sitting in the run Ziggy walked over my legs and Duke was sniffing about my hands so I think I'm getting there:) Great advice about the slow breaths, I really need to be more relaxed when I'm trying to handle them.
 
The key to a pigs heart is through their stomachs...
Hand feeding them lettis gets them use to your hands faster though but don't feed them through the bars of the cage as this can make them start nipping you as soon as your hand hits the bars so feeding them with the cage open is always best...
 
Teddy & Duke love their grub but Ziggy isn't as focused on treats as them. She eats plenty but she's not as food crazy as them. I'm pretty sure Teddy would eat until she exploded if I let her! Last week I put one of those living salad trays in & thought I'd go back in 10 minutes to remove it, I went back and the whole lot was gone. I couldn't believe it! Thankfully they didn't have any tummy upsets afterwards. It was a huge amount of lettuce, I know not to do that again!
