I'm SO flipping livid. Callie is in so much pain that shes crying at night. She's on melicam in the morning for pain but she needs to be on something different because come night time shes crying shes in so much pain. I had my mom call on Thursday because shes better at handling this sort of thing than I am. They told me id get a call later that day. Surprise surprise I didn't. (But they swear up and down they did. I triple checked my phone and my mom's. There was no message on the answering machines.) So i waited and waited and waited. I've been having to give her Melicam at night to stop her crying (which is absolutely heart break can I just say.) I'm TERRIFIED of accidentally over dosing her or ruining her internal organs doing this but I cant stand hearing her cry and knowing shes in that much pain.
Anyways I called the vet today. I talked to the first secretary and she told me shed call me back. Well one of the rudest secretary's they have called me back and was SUPER snitty asking (and I quote) "were you seriously thinking you'd get a prescription today? Why haven't you talked to the specialist in Toronto?"
I want to cry and scream at once. This is so inhumane and so unprofessional of them. I will move heaven and hell for this piggie. I REFUSE for her last while on this earth to be in this much pain. Last time I saw them the specialist basically said this is the end of the road for Callie. All we can do now is keep her comfortable. Taking her to anymore vets will just unessecarily stress her out. If I need more pain meds I should be able to deal with my vet in town. If I dont get a call back today (they close in 15 minutes) I WILL call the specialist and on top of that ill take Callie to the emergency vet in town.

I have found this vet for you in Ontario from the Guinea Lynx website. Is it close to where you are?

    Ferris Lane Animal Hospital

Dr. Deroo is very "Cavy Savy" and is an Exotics and Avaian Specialist. She has a warm and compassionate manner. Julie has over 30 Guinea Pigs of her own. She is very knowledgeable and willing to share information, treating clients as partners in the care of their animals. She is experienced in treating "Heart Pigs" and utilizes the services of a Toronto compounding pharmacy to ensure that dosages are correct for cavies.
Dr. Deroo has helped us to care for 3 of our 6 pigges directly, and by way of advice and sharing of knowledege for our herd as a whole.
Dr. Deroo is extremely gentle and considerate when the time comes to help animals "Over The Rainbow Bridge".
Ferris Lane Animal Hospital also offers both evening and Saturday appointments.

Of the many vets that I have seen over the years as a pet owner, Dr. Deroo is my favourite, by far. Her comittment to animals is evident in all that she does.

I can’t add to the advice but wanted to add support at such a hard time.
I’m glad you feel you can rant, vent and scream on the forum.

So I got a call earlier today. The OWNER of my vets business in town got a hold of me. Theyve ordered in a med called Butorphanol I'm pretty sure thats the name. I should have written it down but I didnt, I've been under the weather so I had just woken up lol. She said she told the supplier to have it to them asap so fingers crossed itll be in tomorrow. I know next to nothing about this drug so as soon as I'm done typing this up I'm going to research the living crap out of it. My vet for now suggested that if Callie is in pain I should put a heater or something of the sorts on one side of the cage so Callie can curl up to it but also walk away from it if she wants. I've been heating up a water bottle and wrapping it in a towel. So far Callie hasnt really gone near it but she might now that its night.

Thank you so much for this information! If I get another piggie she'll def be going here. Its 2 hours away but I'd move heaven and hell for my babies.

What dose of pain relief are you giving Callie now? What does she have morning and night? It Is always advisable to give pain relief twice a day due to a guinea pigs fast metabolism.

I'm giving her 0.20 mls in the morning and 0.05 at night. Its only supposed to be once a day but shes already terminally ill. I know her days are limited. From what I understand youre not supposed to give this med as often because it can cause heart issues and liver issues and sometimes tummy issues. I didnt think she'd have to take it as often as she has been.

I would definitely be speaking to another vet!

If this happens again, I will be. These vets have been good to me so far, and I'm impressed that the owner actually got on top of things. When I see her I will be mentioning this woman I talked to before who was super rude.

Thank you <3 And thank you for letting me rant here. A lot of other people dont understand. Or they thing "theyre just a rodent. They dont matter." But these piggies are so much more than that. As everyone here knows.

By Melicam do you mean Meloxicam? Is the one you vet has given you for dogs or cats? Meloxicam is safe to give to Guinea Pigs there are quite a few members whose piggies have been on long term Meloxicam.

It is safe for her to have more pain relief than that if she is really struggling. It can be given quite safely long term. One of my girls had an abscess once and she was on 0.3mls twice a day for a month. 0.4 mls a day would be a usual dose that vets prescribe. so you would definitely be safe to give 0.2mls twice a day if you did find that you needed.
Hope that everything goes ok for you in the next couple of days x

Christian was on 0.75ml of Metacam twice a day after his op for 4 days when I ran out and then he didn't need any more as he wasn't in pain.

I just returned from my vets. The owner stayed after hours for me. I was really touched by that. Its called buprenorphine. Shes on 0.88mls. Its a very strong drug and will probably make Callie sleepy but as long as shes taking it at night then there really shouldnt be much of a problem.

Yes! Sorry, after I posted this I saw my mistake and meant to fix it but I didnt. I believe it is for cats and dogs, yes.

Thank you both for this. It makes me feel better to know that what i was doing was okay. I really appreciate it!

The reason I asked if it was for dogs or cats is that the one for dogs is what I had for Christian and I believe that it is stronger than that for cats. Not heard of buprenorphine but maybe that it is me. One of our heath specialists may well have heard of it.

I hoe that you can get Callie’s pain under control. It’s good that the owner is engaged and on side.

I think that is morphine. It should definitely help though may make her sleepy as you say. I hope it helps you get her pain under control.

Okay, this drug is basically a miracle. Callie is back to normal and I can tell shes in little to no pain at all. I can give it to her every other day, it seems to stay in her system longer. She's wheeking and eating and popcorning again. She hasn't popcorned in like a year. I'm so happy shes doing better.
