Hello, so I am not a really new guinea pig owner I have had 3 before my young guinea pig I have now who by the way is named remus. I have never had this problem before eith my past 3 female guinea pigs all who I have cared for and given new good homes too all are still healthy as I'm told by there owners, but onto the real problem. A few months ago I went, to petsmart and bought an 8 week old male guinea pig his name is remus, he was smaller then other guinea pigs and still seems to be a small guinea pig, he is only 3 months old now, he has always been healthy very lively and he would always drink his water right up very fast and eat his food up right away as well, I can say I give him fruits and veggies but not a ton of them. Just recently I noticed that remus wasnt drinking or eati g how he usually does usually when I go to change his water most of it is gone but bery recently id come to change his water and itd be completely full. Same with his food, and usually when I open his cage or even during the cage he would usually be running arounf a ton but lately he has also been ditting in his house inside his cage and not moving. So today I decided to take him out for a little while so my nephew could see him but when I set him down I noticed how he would sit was off. It seemed like he would sit more on the backs of his back feet and not sit regularly and I watched as he would walk it seemed hed some what wobble, like he was walking on the back of his back feet as well. I found this very odd so I left him for a few short minutes with my nephew who is old enough to trust with a pet alone so I went to my guinea pigs cage to change it and I took his little house out from the cage and noticed the bedding on the inside of his house seemed to have diarrhea in it! So I asked my friend what should I do and she said to try and get him to drink more water and to eat also to keep him warm so I been having him sit in my lap like he is now and trying to get him to drink and eat but he is having none of it and keeps moving up in my lap and laying someehat on his side. I am getting very alarmed this has never happened before with other guinea pigs for me and I love remus very much, I do not have enough money for a vet and I really dont have any vets that close to where I live and I am very afraid for him please it would be helpful if someone new what I could do for him.thank you

Welcome to the forum.

I am sorry to hear that your guinea is so ill. If a guinea pig has diarrhoea, and / or is refusing to eat, it is an emergency, and you really do need to get him to a vet as soon as possible. It sounds very serious. You can use the vet locator at the top of the page to help you find a vet, if you're not already registered with one.

Hi and welcome!

Sorry for you, but this is a life and death emergency that needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible!

Make sure that you hand feed and hydrate your Remus to keep the guts going and to keep him from drying out, but that will only go towards keeping him just about alive (if possible) but will not cure him. You won't have much of a window of time if your piggy has stopped eating and is very poorly. :(

Could you please tell us which country you are in?

There are RSPCA vets and some vets let you pay monthly, you have no choice but to take him if he has these symptoms, please take him to a vet asap it is really an emergency! Hope he gets well soon x

I agree with the above, only a vet can help. From your post it looks like you are in the US but if you could confirm that would help.

I hope you manage to get him to a vet as soon as possible. It is always urgent when a guinea pig has diarrhoea.

the above posters are right my guinea pig stopped eating and drinking , even tho I was able to get him to a vet straight away and he was rehydrated by the vet and I spent two days handfeeding him care solution it was not enough , he passed on just last night I buried him this morning . they go downhill so fast its unreal I'm sure a vet would not refuse to treat him if you could offer to pay in instalments

I'm so sorry to hear that @carmen winch
thank you goth mummy I'm very depressed at the moment the vet phoned this morning and said we tried our best and because he was so weak he wouldn't have withstood
having blood taken for dianostic tests I just hope that people realise a pig can be within 48 hrs of passing on once it stops eating

@carmen winch SO sorry to hear about your loss. I lost my girl on Sunday too and am still devastated, it's so horrible and difficult. Expect our two will be having fun up there together x

I hope so he is a rather large black longhaired coronet with blonde patches despite the fact he had a loyal wife he leaves behind it never stopped him lusting through the bars at my 3 sows in nextdoor cage I could never let them all free range together as he was after them squeaking madly with the result his wife became insanely jealous of the poor things , and a nasty row ensued with his wife on top of poppy and other sows cowering in a corner while he ran around quite oblivious to the chaos he started , once I had them all back in I could laugh at it many good memories of him , I'm sure hel find your girl , he is very dashing

@carmen winch aw bless him! He sounds gorgeous; A ladies man then. She was very very pretty and everybody who met her commented on how pretty she was, very little with beautiful tricolour hair which was incredibly soft. She was had a lovely character too for such a young guinea she was so confident and loved darting around our flat, being naughty and trying to get behind the sofa so she could run round the back of it, only to come out the other side. Obsessed with tunnels and exploring xx
