Hello everyone, hoping somebody might be able to help? Flo has had a bit of a weepy eye on and off for a couple of months. Initially I thought she had a bit of cloudy goo in it so I cleaned it with cotton wool and warm water and checked for any scratches or hay, but it looked fine. It was OK after that for a day or two, then I noticed the fur around her eye was damp like the eye had been watering - no cloudiness though, this time. Again I checked it but couldn't see anything wrong. Again, it was fine a while later! Every little while now this seems to happen, her eyelid will look swollen and the fur is damp, and she will close that eye more than her other one - then hours later it's fine again. We took her to the vet and explained her symptoms, obviously that day the eye was fine! The vet checked her over and said she's in great condition and nothing obvious going on, and perhaps she had a touch of hay fever....
So my question is, has anyone else experienced this in their piggies and have any idea what it could be?

Not exactly the same, but we did have a similar thing with Eddi.
He started 'winking' a lot, and couldn't seem to keep one eye open fully.
It was intermittent, because the moment I tried to get a video of it he was fine.
Also fine in all other ways (eating, drinking, pooping, demanding blueberries, endless ruble strutting, etc).

I spoke to the vet and she recommended washing it gently a couple of times a day with sterile saline, which we did.
It cleared up for a bit and then came back.
We took him into the vet and she did all the usual tests, drops, etc to check fro a scratch or foreign body, and everything looked fine.
But because there was clearly a problem, she prescribed antibiotic eye drops anyway.
She said it could be a very low level infection of some sort, and at least the drops would rule that out.
Within 48 hours the winking stopped, and 7 days later he was fine. Stopped the drops after 1 week and the problem has never returned.

So might be worth us going back to the vet for some drops then. Thanks - glad to hear Eddi is ok now

It sounds like there is some kind of irritation going on. Did your vet check whether something is stuck under the eyelid? Are your piggies in a drafty place?

No, they are indoor piggies although they go outside in their run in good weather. Our vet did check the eye but all seemed well. Not sure about the hay fever suggestion, wouldn't it be both eyes and more regular if that was the issue?

You can only really check for scratches or damage by adding in the flourescent drops and checking under a light- did your vet do this?

If not i suggest you request it, that way you know wether the eye lid or eye ball is the problem.

It could be conjuctivitis but best have any damage ruled out fully first x
