No you need to get them cut when they grow too long as it can cause problems. I tend to get mine done by a vet as I don’t feel comfortable yet. It depends on how quick they grow really

I agree - it is not ok to not trim them. They need to be cut fairly regularly. If you don’t cut them they will get longer and longer and curl back underneath the foot, cause cuts and all sorts of damage. Please take your piggy to the vet when they need to be cut, particularly if you are unsure of how to do it and when to do it.

Hi,
Could ask at your vets ,but at my vets its cheaper for a vet nurse to trim them. I trim three of my girls nails but the forth girl has black nails so the nurse trims the front ones for me.

I agree with the above, I have black nailed wriggly pigs and get the vet to do it usually.

There are quiet pet nail grinders online which you just apply briefly to the end of the nail, which some recommend as less scary to use than clippers.

We have started doing our pale footed piggies at home just trimming a little or doing one foot every week whatever they are most comfortable with. Our dark footed piggies go see the vet nurse about every 12 weeks for nail trims, which is about as long as you can leave the nails sensibly before they need a good trim. But the nails do need trimming regularly either at home or by the vet nurse!

Baby nails will eventually start growing and continue to grow and twist, crippling your piggy in the longer term.

If you are afraid of cutting nails yourself, then please call your vet clinic and ask whether they have a piggy keeping nurse who is willing to do the job for you against a moderate fee. We have a number of forum members doing this.

You definitely have to trim them. If you're nervous about cutting them yourself, you can get a vet to do it - however, I found these nail clippers (Kaytee brand) work best. I used to use a human nail clipper but this one is way better. Makes it so much easier.

Just be careful to not get the quick (although, sometimes it happens). I trim my piggy's nails once a month.
