Hi Shelley,

I know that nail clipping can be traumatic. My heart was in my mouth the first time I done it. Do your piggies have black nails?

To put your mind at rest, get some styptic powder and keep it by your side. If the worst happens a dab of that will stop the bleeding straight away. If you can't get the powder, running the toe under running cold water will stop the bleeding.

Also, the piggie will usually squeak if it feels any pressure on the quick so you can do a careful test squeeze first.

Invest in some small animal nail clippers. I got mine for 99p on ebay. They are fab.

Good luck
xx

Aww, Shelley love.

My mum wont go near piggies' nails either. Sometimes it makes things easier with 2 people and also wrapping the piggy up.

Don't be afraid if you ever do end up cutting the quick - once will teach you not to go far, or be extra careful!

Shez - if your guinea sits still for a few seconds you are halfway there! Just try taking the very tip of the nail off.

Perhaps if there's a vet near you they might show you how to do it? Our local vet showed me how to clip my piggy's nails when I was at the tender age of 12!

i am 26 the vet showed me how to do the dogs and i was so scared and hes a big german shepherd.i felt every nail we cut down i won't tempt it myself, i just don't want to hurt my babies. i just feel better if someone can just come and do it without me looking

wrap them in towels and let the leg dangle out the bottom hold them securly and nibble until you feel its enough with nail clippers, first few times its scary and always have blood stopper powder ready they can move >:( accidents will happen but you get so use to it, I dont even think it a problem, my dog has dew claws that grow round the pad so need clipping God they are thick I need saftey glasses doing his ;)
