Could anyone recommend the best way to trim nails for a beginner? My piggies nails are very sharp! Can you file them at all?
Any help will be fab
thanks!

If you go to the top of health and illness there is a post specifically for cutting piggies nails. I used to wrap my sow in a towel :)

Yap,the link chocco gave you is really helpful, especially the pictures at the end of the page worked for me. I recently had the same problem as you but with chocco's help and these pictures everything went fine :)

do you all use human clippers was thinking in purchasing some piggie ones as george needs a trim.

All my human ones are rubbish (probably cheap) & don't even seem to work on my nails. If human ones are way to go anyone know any good pairs I can buy as I generally use sissors on mine :)

Just realised that might have sounded like I use sissors on my piggies. Sorry meant on my nails :))

The guinea pig lynx link is invaluable and gives you great advice on the best way to cut, and most important way to hold while you are doing it

I bought small animal clippers but i dont like them and will buy some human nail clippers as this will be much easier.

I've always used human nail clippers on my pigs. Personally I don't wrap them in a towel as they get more distressed, but that is a personal choice. I find getting all the nails done as quick as possible is also a good idea as the longer I hold my boys & try to cut their nails, the more fed up & fidgety they get making it all harder.

Have confidence in what you do & make sure your piggy feels safe & you will do OK. :))

I use clippers as feel they are safer....dont want to cut piggies legs off and sometimes they squirm so clippers feel a safer bet to me. Really depends on your preference and what you are comfortable with tho :)

I haven't used human nail clippers at all. I bought a pair in pets at home designed for smaller animals.

We cut our girls nails for the first time a few weeks ago. I brought some clippers especially for small animal use and they are pink :)p I held one at a time stroking and talking to her whilst OH clipped away. He just cut the very tips as Connie has dark coloured nails. It didn't go as bad as what I first imagined.

my four a right little monsters for doing their nails! they just dont want to sit still. I find the back feet the best to do, but trying to do there front is a different story, one of them trys to eat the clippers while I'm trying to clip his nail. I tend to use human nail clippers and a nail file.

My old piggie didnt care but tallulah is a right pain in the bottom!

she wriggles and gets ooo bored easily! but all the same in 2 attemps i get it done.
