Hi,

I know how to cut guinea pigs nail but when your piggie has a black nail how do you know how much to cut because the nail is all one colour?

Thanks

I've heard several things which is just taking a little at a time and shining a light from under them. I think I'm lucky both my girls have light nails

i think i read if you shine a light behind the nail you can see where the nail ends and the skin starts or something along those lines.

hi

some people find shinig a torch under it shows up the quick, or if your not sure just cut off a little bit.

its pretty traumatic isnt it, i do my mums piggy too as she cant bring herself to do it, but hes a BIG strapping lad and luckily has huge thick nails so they arent so bad, however my two are both under a year old and are tiny nails, eeeeeek!

i cut one of mine a few weeks ago and cut the quick :S it bled for a little bit but soon stopped. she didnt make a sound.

really? god mine do, they squeek like its the worst thing in the world, so do my dogs, well one of them, but he is a whippy whippet and a right little drama queen!! he he he.

You can buy ermmmm is it.....styptic pens? or something like that, meant to stop the bleeding?

she doesnt fluff screams the place down! they all try to bite so OH distracts them whilst i cut. you can but its the first time i had ever caught it. i pressed a tissure to it and i think a piece stuck and stopped it.

i think we feel worse than they do, its just the thought that you have hurt your baby. When you rip a nail too short, it hurts, but its bareable isnt it?

i think we do feel a lot worse cookie was like get off mum i want to go back! and I'm sat feeling guilty for hours. thats true and its not like we rip there nails off. never compared us ripping a nail to cutting theres

Yep styptic pens look like a little lip balm stick. You can buy them from the chemist, they're for men to use when they cut themselves shaving. Only a couple of pounds if that. Thankfully I haven't had to use it but it's reasuring to know it's there.
I just snip tiny bits off at a time and if I think I'm getting close to the quick just gently squeeze before the clippers cut and they soon let me know if it's too close! I've struggled to see the quick when shining a torch through the nail, it might be because George's nails are so thick.

the thing that scares me more than anything is when you find the place you want to snip and press together then they wriggle and I'm like nooooo youll rip the nail out of the bed and i go all hot :{

i hate that to :( you get the clippers all lined up and they pull there foot awaymallethead

it would be quicker if you didnt move but they dont listen

Oh you get a horrible feeling don't you when they pull there foot away i don't want to look just incase you have cut the wrong bit of the nail!

I've tried telling them if they stay still and let me do it really quickly they'll get a treat but they never fall for it. They all turn into wriggle bums! :))

i no they dont listen i tell them that to but they still insist on trying to get away. maybe one day they will learn.

I dont think they'll ever understand lol, they want there way! I do feel sorry for them though when they dot want there nails cut but it has to be done!

i dont think they will either, i dont like cutting mine but sometimes you have to :(

definatly gunna trythat torch idea!
Otis has some black nails and every single time mums cut and made him bleed on the same nail! poor wee thing gets so upset but he isnt to bad till then, found i i hold him aginst my chest so hes sitting up and mum cuts his nails i can distract him with cuddles and celery!
not done chewie yet cos his hasnt needed doing yet...kinda dreading him cos he wont even sit still for cuddle time atm cos hes so young!
