I've trimmed our girls nails myself before but this time we took them to the vets to be done. Rosie had a corn on her foot - don't know why, the vet didn't say.

Anyway they have been living in a Nero savic 3 and with an outside run and an hour or so running free indoors. We're on holiday next week so I've been and bought a Nero 4 as the kids (23/20) aren't likely to let them out much :(

well tell the piggies congrats on a new home! and congrats you get to go on a vacation....I can bet you your kids have them out more than you think they will....lol I'm scared to death to even Try to cut my piggies nails...though they need doing very soon....is it hard?

Mine don't mind a trim but the vet cut them very short compared to me on the front paws/feet/toes? He used a light to shine through to see where to go to!

I don't think they will get out as my daughter will be scared of them escaping and my son won't even think about it :( We have a cat too so they won't let them roam around the house like we do.

Their new house is pretty big though for two 9 month old ladies and they won't get it until the day before we go so they get to whizz about and get used to it.

lol, they're zooming around the living room floor as I type and scaring each other by pushing the food bowl so it make a noise on the wooden floor.

I've cut a cats nails....just the little tip off, so it wasnt scratchy...I'm assuming its the same. maybe hold them in a towel will help me

honestly it's very easy. the main part is that you hold them because they might squirm around. if you have a very tame piggy, it should be no problem. the problem with me and gilbert is that he's not that tame...so he runs away when I'm clipping his nails. you can keep them distracted with some food and also get someone to help you hold the guinea pig.:)

I'll bet that annoyed the cat so it spent ages sharpening it on someone's fence.

Cats need sharp claws and retract them so they don't hurt usually unless they want to scratch or grip to pull up.

The vet used a light so he could see where the cuticle ended, if you cut too short they'll hurt and bleed a little.
I usually use human nail clippers as they're quick and easy with a piece of cucumber as a distraction. They don't struggle though, I wait until they've been petted and fussed for a while before I try.

They were inside cats...so thats why i did it...they were sharpening them on my couches!pow-pow

Yeah, you can use a towel if they squirm too much.
Be careful to keep your fingers away from their mouths, though!
Mine bite the towel like I don't know what!
You do not want your finger in the middle of that @)

I find that if you give them some food to munch on, they're so distracted that it's easy.

If you make it a two person job it is relatively easy, The person doing the holding cuddles them gently but firmly to their chest, but facing out so you can see their tummy and more importantly legs and feet separate their toes and slowly and carefully does it talking to them calmly the whole time. Have done both rabbits and guinea pigs this way and have never been bitten.

Just incase it goes wrong and you catch the quick you want a silver nitrate pen or dip it in a little cornflour to help stop the bleeding.

I do all my pets claws.
Angel, Chestnut & Eli were fairly easy to do.
I held them in a towel and then did their nails and gave them a treat after (mustn't forget the treat), i dunno why i gave Chestnut & Eli a treat cos they both bit me 8...
Naughty boy's :))

But how can you give one and not the other two :(

I have to do Millie's claws when she is sleeping because she is a biter, hates a bath, haircut, claw trimming.
A proper little madam :))
