Hi everyone,
I bet there are a few people out there who agree with me. i am quiet nervous at trimming one of my girls nails as they are all black. Any helpful tips please.

You could get a vet nurse to do it for you, even if its just to show you how. I just take a little off but often, if you do catch the quik, it isnt the end of the world, but it is nerve racking when you go for it. Some people use a torch under the nail to show the quik, but i have never had luck with this
 
Trimming nails for us is a two person job, I hold the piggy while Mrs SP trims the nails, when we had piggies with black nails we would use a torch to shine on the nail so we could see the blood supply to it.

I would suggest going to the vets, So they can show you how to do it.
 
Thank you everyone , i will give it ago with a torch, i am sure hubby will help. The back ones aren't to bad its the front nails make me nervous. They just know when the clippers come out too.
 
My girls each have 1 dark paw that I'm always so nervous about clipping nails. I personally clip as little as possible to avoid cutting the quick. My suggestion is going to the vet and having them show you :) best of luck xx
 
I will trim the occasional nail back though when I see them curl toward their foot. That's also usually my cue to go get everyone's nails done at the vet's. I'm too worried about hurting them.
 
You are not alone at all. My piggy Ginger has black nails. I have never taken him to the vet, I do it myself. It took me awhile to get confident enough to cut them but I think i'm doing a decent job and I've never drawn blood. I recommend cutting them at daytime versus nighttime (I'm sure you do lol) and being near a window or a VERY bright light-it makes it sooooo much easier. good luck x
 
i have 19 piggies,i clip all there nails myself !i place a lap pad on my stomach.place piggie with his/her back against my tummy, give piggie favorite veg.then calmly and methodically clip each nail.it is difficult but with patience and practise it does become easier.going to the vet is a good option.dark nails i just take the tip off,and do these twice a month.:hug:
 
I've only got one and a half white paws over my four pigs. I just trim their nails little and reasonably often. I sit them on a safe surface about kitchen worktop height and then work round them one paw at a time. One of them is very well behaved, the other three have become resigned to the fact that I will be cutting their nails so they might as well submit and get it over with.
