Just a really random question. I don't know whether to choose my guinea pigs names now, or wait until I've picked them to choose names that match their appearances.
I've always chosen names in advance. My Syrian Fred, was called Fred the second I decided to get a hamster. And then my Winter White Dwarf, Elfie, was called Elfie the second I decided to get a dwarf hamster. (It was Christmas, she's my little Christmas Elf)
Even my daughter, Luna, was named Luna before I'd even gotten pregnant! and my future 2nd baby will be called Nova (boy) or Astria (girl).

I really feel like I should wait until I've got my piggies to name them. But I don't want to bring them home and be absolutely clueless on what to call them!
So what has everyone else done, named them in advance or after they've got them?

I'm horrible with choosing names and my daughter was absolutely without reason, even in her excitement lol. I looked for days before each but ended up taking another three days at least for each of them after testing every name in the book for each one. My last one, I thought I had the perfect name but after getting to know her, the whole family agreed she was more like a little bird so it changed in the first days anyhow.

Sounds like you are really good with finding fantastic and adorable names for your little ones. Nova and Astria are really beautiful names. My husband always liked the name Galatia if he ever had a daughter. I would've definitely gone with that-I love more unique names. My daughter is Medb Kynna and my son is Matteo Angelo (after my husband's family).

Luna is the name my son gave his very majestic, white long haired cat. I always thought it was beautiful.

I always wait until I know their personality before naming them. As all of mine are adopted they have already come with names. Sometimes I have kept their names. For example Sylvia and Ralph were both named by the rescue and the names really suited them, so I have kept them. But I am rubbish at picking names so it’s a good job someone names them first for me.

Sounds like your really good at picking names , your children’s names are beautiful

We pick our piggies up around the 8th June and they will be my daughters pets with me helping so she has chosen names , we are getting 2 little girlies to start and my daughter loves anything nature related so she has decided to call them Sky & River, I think they sound like calm happy names so hopefully our piggies will like them too! Xx

Have a read through this Guinea Pig Magazine article here which I have written with the help of forum members - you may find it helpful! It also discusses this aspect.
Personally I usually make a short list of names I thing suitable and that I let the rescue I am adopting from choose. However if the name doesn't work out once the piggy is here, I change it.
Guinea Pig Names: considerations, solutions, inspiration and resources

I try to pick a name that suits the pig. It's usually either to do with their appearance or their character. Sometimes it takes a while to find exactly the right name.
So Panda was because he had eye patches, Tufty because of her fluffy ears.
Smartie because she was so clever, and Pickle because he was full of surprises :)
I have had similar trouble with naming cats. Pixie was Pixie from the minute I first saw her, but it took me a week to come up with the right name for my other cat. But once I'd thought of it there were no doubts whatsoever and Pudding she became.

My pets have already come with names if rescues (I'm superstitious about changing them) or I usually have a name in mind well before they come home but that's usually because I've already met them, cuddled them and reserved them :)

I named mine after, for a few weeks I referred to them as their colour/coat type. They don’t care either way! Sky and River are lovely names

Thank you, my daughters just coming up 11 and loves trees and nature and she was considering pine & oak at one point so I was relieved when she said she had decided on Sky & river! 😂
