Well since I have had my two new girls in July. They have been breathing really noisily. They make a wheeze'y sound from their noses.

I took them to the vets to get them checked out. Although no other signs of problems.
Both eating well, weeing, pooping all fine, energetic, clear eyes &noses-no discharges. They have both put on 200g roughly since I have had them &at a guess I would say they are about 12-18 months old.

The vet said they are mostly noisy on the inward breathing through their noses. Their chests sound fine &no fluid build up.

He said to try dog loxicom for a week or so. To see if they had inflamed airways &this should. Reduce swelling &open the airways to hopefully reduce the noise.
That was on the 8th Oct15. They haven't really changed much although slight improvement. But tonight I am sat listening to them nasal'y again now. No loxicom given last night.

The vet didnt want to use antibiotics unless he had to. But sounds like I'll need to take them back to the vets. He did wonder if they had been exposed to bordetella in their previous home (had been outside in hutch on ground about 6 in together, next to farmland )? Vet thought they may have got over the initial infection &now left with damaged nasal tubes. Any suggestions?

Grace is fine &no heavy breathing etc although treated exactly the same as the other two.
Everybody is bedded on shredded paper &hay in the same cage.

Suggestions welcome please

Thankyou. Xx

The only thing I can think of is: Is the hay dusty at all? Have you considered trying a dust-free hay to see if that helps to clear it? xx

the hay is the same as usual, its quite good stuff at the moment actually. That had crossed my mind too though. Thankyou  Xx

I think it may be something atmospheric if they are both suffering so maybe the hay is a different harvest to normal? Has the vet considered an anti-histamine? do they improve when on the Metacam?

Yes they do seem to have improved a little but not much when on metacam/loxicom.

Grace is in the same cage &she's a silent breather. I have had a few different bags of hay &they dont seem to be any different- its really baffled me.

They have always been like it ever since I have had them.

It might be worth me suggesting an antihistamine to the vet though.
What sort are usually given to piggies, can they take piriton?

There are never any air fresheners, aerosols or perfumes etc used near them either -the bathroom is the opposite end of the house anyway.

It seems to be worse when they are really relaxed, in the evenings I notice it more- chooken legs out&lets start nasal noises!

Xx

I've had/got a few gpigs that had a nasal sound, eventually I realised that it was either because I put their veggies in a bowl after washing them, the odd pig would stick their noses in & inhale the moisture, or another one would move the pellets around the bowl & inhale the dust bits :( Spreading the veggies on the floor helped & now if one of them gets a snuffle I use my own medication to clear it, I can pm you if you like about it as it was recommended to me by the CCT & it has worked for mine. Alternatively a dose of Bisolvon from the vets might clear it up as well. Basically I now give veggies scattered, not in a bowl & also give all hay a good shake, store in a box & shake again before putting in their house :)

Yes they can have Children's Pirition. Message me if you want to look into it and I can tell you the dose that I have given in the past. Then you can discuss it with your vet.

I have a sow named Belle, Bella has a cronic nasil problem, and when it was realy bad she made a hoot hooting sound

Vet did all tests and no pronounced abnormaities were found , vet surgested suderfed ! It helped to a dege , but the thing that helps most is

@Poppy'sMum hmm now that's interesting I have usually given them food of some description then I sit &watch them for a while until they snuggle down &doze off.
Their pellets are in a bowl, but I usually throw away the dusty bits in the bottom of the bag (or use it for syringe feeding with added water if I need it).
I might mention bisolvon to the vet too :)
Ive never used it before how does it come? Tablets-powder? Will pm u tomorrow after work.

@helen105281 that would be handy to know &check with the vet, it would probably be cheaper than there medications too :)
Will pm you tomorrow. Just woke up from dozing off in the chair, not really with it at the moment!

@gizzy what actually is the hhpa? Think I have read your thread on Bella. Is it some form of particle filter? How is it used? Are they expensive to buy &run?

Thanks peeps-I have some new avenues to chase up

Luv the girls &I xx
