Nasty Eye Problem Please Help

Hi everyone.
Last Thursday when all my girls were out have floor time, one of them climbed on Winter's head. Not unusual as her best friend is quote nervous.
We noticed her eye was bleeding round the edge. I cleaned her up and checked her. It looked like a claw had just caught the edge of the skin.
Later on I checked her again this time with better light and could see that a claw had cut across her eyeball.
Friday I rang our guinea pig vet who unfortunately was going on holiday. She said to bring her in to see the locum on the Saturday. I took her along and he thinks the eye is save able and gave me two different drops. One is a corneal repair gel called Remend. The other is an antibiotic gel called Isathal.I've used it for two days now but I think it looks worse. I asked about pain relief but he didn't think it would be painful.
I have an appointment on thursday to see a different locum who specialises in eyes.
I'm really worried about her. He told me to separate her from our herd with no one with her. But I've put her friend in as they've been together all their lives and I didn't want to cause her more stress. It was a total freak accident.
Has anyone heard of the medications? Do you think I should take her back sooner? I think the eye vet is also in Tuesday. Sorry for the long long post.

I'd take her back the vets if it seems to be getting worse. Have you got any pictures of the eye?

Isathal is the new brand name for old fucithalmic and is what you usually get for any eye scratches and ulcerating corneal injuries.
I have not head about remend, but perhaps @Abi_nurse knows about it?

But you are right to contact your vets again if things are deteriorating. I would contact them tomorrow by phone and take it from there.
 
It looks like the eye insides are coming out but the vet said it was where the membrane had rucked up. Karen
 
I'd get her to see an emergency vet ASAP to get her checked over. After a couple of days you would be hoping to see some improvement. I don't think it can wait until Thursday. She may need a change in treatment.
Remend is a corneal repair gel (new on market) and is what we are treating my Connie with @Wiebke.

That looks nasty! I would certainly seek vet care promptly, if it has got worse instead of better!
 
Fingers firmly crossed! These things always happen at the worst of times. :(
 
Poor thing! Glad you've got the vets booked, eye injuries are so worrying but with the right treatment they can go away quickly :) healing vibes to the little one x
 
That looks so sore, I agree with the others. Is she on any pain relief in addition to the eye drops?
 
I haven't used remend personally but seeing what it is it looks like a lubricant which helps with healing of superficial corneal ulcers. This does not look superficial and it looks to me like there is bleeding into the globe itself. I would agree potentially some pain relief, ocular pain is very hard to determine but if it's injured it must be sore. Please try to see a specialist about this as it doesn't see like a normal ulcer or scratch.

Thank you. I totally agree it doesn't look like a normal scratch. I'm ringing tomorrow. The eye specialist lady is in Tuesday as well so I'm hoping to see her then. I don't really want to see the other locum again . Karen

No she isn't. I specifically asked about pain relief but he said it wasn't necessary. I was a bit unsure about that as to my way of thinking it must be really sore. I'm hoping to get to see the eye specialist Tuesday rather than Thursday. Karen
 
Hopefully they will give you pain relief. I know it can be sore even with just a hay poke. Is she eating ok?
 
Just thought I'd update. Winter saw the eye specialist today. She recommends the eye is removed. It is so swollen now that the eyelids can't shut over the eye. She thinks if we try medication to save it we will still be taking it out in a couple of weeks. Like me she thinks she is in pain
So tomorrow she will have her eye removed. She is staying there tonight to save the journey back and forth. She has her friend with her. Just hope she is strong enough to survive.
Does anyone have any tips on care after the operation please? Karen x
 
My Tim had his eye removed (due to a retrobulbar abscess) and is doing really well. Debbie (Furryfriends) looked after him post op so I will let her answer. By the time he came home to me his eye socket was virtually healed. You wouldn't know he had an eye missing the way he charges about.

I hope the op goes ok, she will feel much better after it is removed.

I have dealt with four piggies who have had enucleation surgery and all have made a fantastic recovery. Piggies cope really well with one eye, and in fact each and every one of them hasn't seemed at all concerned and in fact have immediately seemed so much happier.

Thank you. Actually I think that is the thread I've read. It was very informative thank you.
At the moment she is separated from the herd but still with her friend that she has always been with. Do you think it's ok to leave her friend with her? I don't want to stress her more by putting her on her own.

I have always found leaving a friend with them really helps recovery. The more recent ones I have dealt with have had the eye socket left open, to enable flushing, as the piggy has needed enucleation surgery due to a retrobulbar abscess. Even with an open eye socket, we have left their little friend with them.

Thank you. My experience has always been they are better with their friend. I was just concerned as I've not dealt with such a big op before. The locum I saw the other day said she should be on her own but I ignored him because I've always found it makes them more depressed.
