We noticed yesterday while giving Bramble a health check over, that he had a lump on his shoulder and when we investigated further, my husband touched around the area to see what it was, and a big chunk of hair came out, which had blood on part where the roots had been and it smelled really horrible, like it was all infected. Then we noticed there was quite a deep hole where the hair had come out from, and it was all red and sore looking! Poor Bramble, it must have been from when he and Herbie's introductions went wrong and they got into a proper fight for a few seconds, and Herbie must have bit down on Brambles shoulder, but we didn't find it until yesterday! 😟

Anyway, I got some of 20ppm Colloidal Silver out of the cupboard and got a dropper and dropped some drops on it into the hole and all around his shoulder, and today when we checked him over the wound had totally healed and scabbed over, which we were relieved about because it was quite deep and obviously infected!

Hi

Please be aware that a burst abscess needs to heal from the inside out. It needs ideally a twice daily flush with a mild antiseptic and a drain so every little speck of infection is coming out or it will come back worse than ever. You will need to work off the scab that is forming over the opening in later days in order to flush for as long as possible, ideally as close as you can come to 10 days but a minimum of 5 to be in with a change. They are not always easy to get rid of in guinea pigs and they should never be underestimated.

Guinea pigs always have gunk in their mouth so there is a good risk of an abscess forming inside a deeper bite wound.

I would recommend to see a vet as you may additionally need a strong antibiotic.

Abscesses have an unmistakeable strong smell; that is the giveaway.

Thanks, but this was weeks ago now and he was fine next day after we applied the Colloidal Silver to the wound (Which was completely healed up,) and he's had no trouble since. 😌

I agree with @piggieminder . We have seen abscesses coming back after half a year on this forum.
Hopefully, it's not going to happen to you but you are technically not out of the woods yet.
