Gosh Newton gave me quite a fright!
I was cleaning out the squeaks which means the room is full of pigs and pig stuff! Before I let the pigs roam around I always block of the side of the fridge so they can’t go down there.
I watched Newton having fun with the girls, turned back to the cage and then turned back around to grab the dustpan. I couldn’t see Newton. Then it suddenly dawned on me that I hadn’t blocked the fridge gap! ARGH! I raced over there to see Newton’s big hairy butt at the end of the gap! PANIC! It leads behind the kitchen cabinets, thats inaccessible and what was really stressing me the most was the fact that there is old packs of mouse bait dotted behind the cabinets (hate the stuff but we have SUCH a bad mouse problem that my partner sometimes cracks it and puts poison down in safe areas). I immediately ‘WHEEEEEEEEK’d’ and grabbed a bag of salad and WHEEEEK’d some more. Caught his attention straight away. He started coming out but then scattered back in. All the other pigs are wheeeeking because they think I’m giving them salad. So I carried on telling him it’s salad time and thank god he came out. UGHH my heart! Luckily I know he was only in there for a second, and he hadn’t ventured further behind the cabinets so I know he hasn’t eaten anything dangerous.
If I hadn’t noticed straight away though. Ugh I don’t even want to think about it!

Oh and then when it was time to put everyone away I could only find 3 of them.. I couldn’t find Olive anywhere! It’s only a small room and I counted them all after Newton’s escape so I know she wasn’t down there. There isn’t any other hidey spots, she wasn’t in any of the boxes or under there cage. My heart started racing again, thinking the worst. Then I checked the pile of dirty pig blankets and woohoo there she is, all comfy, hiding in the smelly bedding pile. PHEW!

Have any of your pigs have you mini heart attacks?

For being a naughty boy, I decided to give him a hair cut. As he was getting a bit long and sometimes a bit damp.
Wasn’t the best trim, Sorry Newton :))

What a pickle! So glad you got him out safe and sound and found Olive. Olive sounds like my old fuzzy Mr Ted, who once went missing and was found way out in the utility room - he had been languishing in a pile of filthy fleeces that I had scooped up and placed by the washing machine ready for washing. Gave us all a dreadful fright to find him missing and realising what horrors could have befallen him. Now I always make sure to shake each fleece before taking it out of the piggy room for washing.

Oh gosh! This is always my worry! Especially as Olive is so little and lightweight, I also worry that one day I’ll throw the hay tray into the muck heap and Olive will be hiding in there!
Of course I always check, check and check again so it would never happen with the washing or hay. But could you imagine! :yikes::yikes:

Oh Gosh! So glad you managed to get him back so quickly. What a fright for you! Love his hair cut though, you've done a great job there. You are looking very handsome Newton! 🥰

I once lost a piggie after cleaning them out and I had taken the dirty hay to the local tip in a large garden trug. I rushed back to the tip in tears and made two tip attendants remove everything out of the skip including two old mattresses I had put the hay in and still no piggie could be found. Rushed back home only to find her sat under the cage in the garage wondering what was going, she must have fallen or jumped out while I was busy cleaning one of the rooms. The cage was on bricks and only 9” off the ground 🙄

Aw I'd have needed ten gin and tonics after that. Sounds like the staff at the tip were understanding!

In the 70s my brother had a guinea pig called Derek. He insisted on taking him to the village fete and of course Derek ran away. My dad searched all night with a torch and found Derek hiding in a hole in the wall that was around the field. Derek didn't go on any more trips out!

It was many years ago and the piggies were my sons. The staff were absolutely brilliant, so kind! I was in a terrible panic, like some sort of sobbing mess too. All I could think was she’d somehow fallen in the trug with the bedding and I’d emptied her in the skip! Those poor men 😱

Glad that had a happy ending
