OK now Tallulah my little trouble maker is now worrying me!

I came home today and she was stood over her poos like she was pooing but looked like she was straining.

She may have however been weeing.
What is worrying me is that i have seen her a few times wee then run her bottom along the floow like a female dog. is this normal?

i was thinking if she may have a UTI?

her daily diet consists of:

plenty of Hay a romaine lettuce leaf and an extra bit of either: cucumber, corriander, tomato, celery or parsley.
Always plentyful availble of tescos guinea mix with added vitamin c. i try her on some of the other now and again for variety but i dont get very far.

she also has a salt lick and water too. sometimes a chewy stick or a hay ball thingy.

any ideas or is she just a naughty guinea?

she has also picked up the habit of chewing the paper at the bottom of her cage. and i do beleive she is eating it :(
is this bad for them?

thanks

xx

erm, worms?.. mites?...
i recon some type of itchy bug! get some one else's appinion too!

I have had a looksy (I'm not now vey liked) and it doesnt look very sore or red or anything..... and her heir is in great shape and her skin is good too..

maybe I'm worrying about nothing...

i do currently use woodshavingd but think I'm going to try out megazorb...seems a good price even with £5 delivery!

yea, don't use wood shavings, try hay or something else, wood shavings are pine and give of a smell or something, and can hurt guinea pigs, also you could be worrying about nothing, but i would go to vets to be sure.

It's normal for urine to run along the floor of whatever cage you are using. UTI symptoms would include red urine or crying when she urinates. Diet sounds fine, never used a salt lick though. It won't hurt her to chew or even eat the newspaper, mine do it all the time. :)

Thanks for your replies, sorry i have not been online for a while.

She has started scratching now. I just had a delivery of Megazorb so I'm going to swap her to that tonight and give her a bath (she has been sat in her wee again! and this time i dont even think she wants to clean herself)

Hopefully this might improve but I'm worries about mites. is there certain symptoms other that itching?

Mites are generally characterised by patches of hairloss, slightly scabby/flaky skin, and sometimes tiny "bumps" (that feel like pimples) on/under the skin.

Skin irritation can be caused by allergies/sensitivities to the bedding too, so see how she does on Megazorb. From what you have described, it sounds unlikely she has mites unless she has symptoms other than occasional scratching.

The first sign of mites (or any skin problem) is vigorous scratching (as opposed to the grooming scratching). If you detect any bald patches of skin and she starts squirming when you run you finger gently over it, then you need to be worried about mites.

However, it may well be that you are just worried and, as you are keeping a closer eye on Tallulah (lovely name!) than usual, you are noticing more. It's happened to me more than once!

For more food ideas and a balanced diet look up this thread: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=30297

Never introduced more than one new food at any time and make changes slowly, so that you wont' upset your piggy's tummy! Tallulah should get about a cupful of mixed veg a day.

PS: all my guinea pigs have at some point discovered the joys of tearing and munching up newspaper; so far none has come to any harm over it!

Thanks Guys, i think you are right. hopefully the megazorb will do the trick.
I must add some new piccis of tallulah on here! she looks just like the female pig in g force :)
