Neautered boar in with girls?

Erm... I don't believe there are rodents in kebab meat. If you believe so, report it to the local authority. Generally it's reconstituted whatevermeat - beef, lamb, chicken, a bit of everything. But not rodent.

I didn't believe it either, i'm just repeating what they told me. They rescued the pigs from an animal market where breeders sell small animals for meat, its cheaper and easier to get small animals on the black market than big animals legally. Thats all i know, the word 'kebab' was used :-\ may not be true, but i don't see why a rescue centre would lie. x

Thanks for that :) i'm just a worrier so any little thing would upset me lol! Another thing i'm wondering, is there any health signs i should look out for to do with the boar being neutered? I've heard that they can have complications any time after the op, i think he has been done a while now, but i just want to be on the safe side :) Also, what if one girl chooses one boar and the other chooses the other? I cant have both lol, what if they don't like either? x

If it didn't fit your arrangement I wouldn't get either of the boys- they both have to like him or its none at all ::) There's lots of boars out there and one of them is right. :)

Thanks karen, i'd feel mean letting the rescue and the piggies down :-\ plus there are no other neutered boars anywhere near me, and none of the rescues will allow me to take a boar which doesn't get on with other boars but cant be castrated incase of accidents. But i only want whats best for my girls so if they didn't get along with either i wouldn't get one :) thanks for the advice x

I agree, the last thing i want is a single boar feeling lonely and my girls fighting with eachother because of it !

Hi again, sorry i'm asking all these questions, just want to get it right! With this piggie being a rescue and not ever having been a pet, he hasn't been handled much and he is at least 6 months so should i just start handling him straight away or let him settle in first? if so, how long do i let him settle?
Love Emma x

The first couple of days leave him to it, but after that try picking him up every day a few times a day for max 10 mins, giving him a treat of a bit of greens everytime. Its a slowly slowly process, but will be well worth it in the long run! O0

Thanks, thought it would be best to let him settle in :) another question! Is there anything specific i should do in terms of bathing/grooming etc for a boar that is different to a sow? x

I think it would be a good idea to give him a bath with some product, maybe something from gorgeous guineas to give him a good, clean start....but wait for him to settle a bit first.

Sorry, have you quarentined him, or put him in with your girls already? Quarentining for 3 weeks minimum would be a good idea, and give you both a chance to bond before he goes in with your girls, and just make sure hes okay health wise.

Generally I only bath every 4-6 months, depending on the piggie coat, and how dirty they are...

Bathing too much does more harm than good in my opinion...

As he gets older you may need to pay special care to his private areas in regards to washing, but for now, nope, nothing specific :) O0

I haven't got him yet, going to pick him up on sunday, i was wondering wether to quarantine him too, will do that. Does he need to be kept completely separate to the girls or can he be near them, it would just work out better if he could be kept in the spare room with the girls as this room has a lock on the door to keep the cat out, just to be safe. I have plenty of C&C grids so was planning on keeping him next to the girls in and extention to their cage then once they are bonded, just take out the divider but its not a problem to keep him completely separate if that's neccessary? He's been given a clean bill of health by the rescue's vet but i suppose it's still better to keep him separate? I'm glad you said to bath him too because he is a bit on the smelly side! x

Hi Emma,

I think if he's from a rescue then he doesn't need being quarantined.

I have a rescue, and I would encourage people to quarentine any piggies people rehome from me, even for their own piece of mind O0

And like I say, it will give him some time to adjust and bond with you first :)

Yeah PP, on some rescue sites they say no need to quarantine as we've checked for illness mites etc etc. But for peace of mind it would be best to quarantine. If you've got room to do that Emma then I would.

Thanks PP, is it ok for him to be in the same room as the girls? just not have contact? and i thought that too louise but then i thought for the sake of having 3 sick piggies it's better to be safe than sorry, also i'd imagine this poor boar has had a pretty horrible life so far and wouldn't want to upset him too much all at once, at least if i get to know him first i will know if he is happy etc once he's in with the girls. I know he's been with females before for breeding because the rescue said they thought both males had fathered a few of the others they brought in and one of them was in with a female when they rescued him, >:( hope he is happy here! x

I agree. Better be safe than sorry. Have the girls chosen him yet? Are they smooth haired boys? Can't wait to see a pic! :D

No they haven't, going sunday :) both boys are abby x's, one is huge and completely ginger with a bit of white on his face, kind of like a dutch marking, and the other is black white a ginger, he has a black face with flecks of ginger in! They're both good looking piggies! is it a good idea to let the girls choose if he's being quarantined? x

I would still let the girls choose at the end of the day he will be there boyfriend :)

Ok thanks, so can i put his cage next to theirs or does it have to be completely separate? Because it's C&C so it's a bit difficult to keep far apart coz they're huge! here the start of what we were thinking:

Obviously the one on the right would be the boy's cage, going for a 2x4 with maybe an upper level, then taking the dividing grids out so all three have all the space (the girls' cage is currently a 4x3 with a 1x3 upper level, so they would eventually have 20square grids floor space and 7square grids upper floor space, maybe more if there's grids over) in 3-4 weeks? btw sorry bout the poop, it was due a clean and has just had one O0 Wot do you think?
Love Emma x

It looks fine to me Emma. What are you using on the bottom of the C&C? Is it Lino? I think I will use Lino for mine I'll up the plastic floor! :D

4x2 would be fine you could make an upstairs to make it interesting for him! :)

it's a wierd plastic lol, my dad made it but i would have to break it if i was making the overall cage bigger so i'l just not tell him haha then buy some lino :) 20sq ft should be ok for lino i think, couldn't find correx anywhere but we didn't try sign makers? hhmm dunno, are you still puttin yours in the shed? u started it yet? we love making them haha :) x

I'm putting mine in the utility room now, I've cleaned it all out can do a 5ft by 2ft until I get another shed in the spring. I'm putting the girls indoors in a 4ft by 2ft hutch and Cuzzy is in the living room with us. It's all I can do for now which is frustrating as I wanted Cuzzy and the boys to live side by side until I can get him a mate. If I get to clean the shed (in a couple of weeks) then maybe I can get some more space going on there and house the boys and cuzzy in the same cage with a divider and the girls in the utility. It all depends on the girls toys...lol The shed is 8ft by 4ft so I'm thinking I can do it but we'll see.

As you can tell I haven't decided fully yet...lol Being a mum makes you cranky!

Lol! It's fun to do, once you get started it's like 'bigger!' hehe! and the pigs don't complain! Aw it was lovely buying all new things for him today! We got him a little bed thing and a rabbit cocoon (was going to get him a pigloo but there's no way either of those boars would fit in one) and we sort of set up how it would look as you can see in the picture, bee is so nosey, she was standing on her back legs nosing in wondering why she couldn't get to the other stuff! Wheeking like mad until bumble started too! God know's what they'll be like once there's a man in there haha! x

Can anyone tell me if i can have his cage next to the girls? Or does it need to be completely separate?

Just thought i'd update, we went to get our new piggie this morning and the girls seemed to like both piggies, being really nosey and wheeking at both so we decided to go with the ginger one. He's gorgeous and isn't phased at all by anything goin on, he hasn't even been in his house, just sitting around the cage munching hay, doesn't seem scared at all, just laid back. He is next to the girls and they will not be parted from the divider! He isn't bothered at all by them, he walks over slowly to have a sniff and then walks away and they go mad at him to come back! Really cute! I've only heard him make one noise which is really different from the noises the girls have made, it sounds like a baby crying but not for long just as if he were wheeking? Can anyone explain this? 'i'm not used to boys, or even fully grown pigs! Well he's lovely but i only have one photo which is on my phone so i'l take some better ones on the camera when he's a bit more used to us :) also, he's about one year old and was neautered about a month or so ago, is this ok?
Love Emma x

Hi Emma,

Aww cute, have you thought of a name yet? In my experience with Sows and Boars their wheeks are different. I was shocked to hear Fleur wheeking after she settled in it was so high pitched I thought something was wrong with her, but then Flora started and I thought it must just be different from the boys!

Phew thank god for that! I thought he was choking haha! It's much deeper than the girls. His name is Ralfie :) he suits it so much! So cute! By the way louise woodlands rescue said they're doing another rescue where they got the 2 boars from next week and getting more pigs, so if you ring i don't know wether they spay sows? Just incase you're still looking?x

Thanks for that! I am still looking, although Peter is keen on trying to bond again. So he said he'll try this time, he may have more luck than me his brother had guineas as a child! If I get another it will be when I get the C&C done. Still selling on Ebay to fund it, should have enough money in a couple of weeks! :)

Ralfie is such a cute name!

Awwwww congratulations :D :D :D

If you arent putting him in quarentine, I would still wait at least 6-7 weeks after neutering before putting him in. We personally, wait 8, but thats just us O0

So glad to hear it is all okay and everyones happy.

And yes, their wheeking will be different ;D
