I have been making a list of all the things I will need to buy for Guinea Pigs, cages, bedding, hay, bottles etc...

Now I need to know what things to buy incase they become ill or an accident happens. Can any one reccommend anything that they keep as an emergency?

I have heard about syringe feeding and that might be something important but I haven't a clue where to buy them.

If anyone has any time, I would really appreciate if you could name some things that you keep on the side incase your guinea pigs fall ill and if it is possible, I would like to know where you can buy the stuff.

Thanks for all your help :)

Its better to be safe than sorry in this situation and leave the diagnosis and treatment to a good cavy savvy vet, if you give us your location we should we able to recommend some near to you.

While as said above its always best to take a piggy to the vets, having an emergency kit for emergencies where a vet cant been seen for an hour or two is not a bad idea. Mine contains a couple of syringes (these came from the vets, when they have had medicine in the past) I also keep probiotics as this can help settle their tums a little.

Also things like piggy shampoo incase they get dirty. :)

Thank you for posting so quickly :)

I definately will take my future piggies to the vet first but I wanted to keep some things just incase they get hurt. E.g. cuts? Syringes for feeding when they are not eating.

I have found a lovely vet who is very experienced in Guinea pigs... I can't seem to find the page I saved.. Going to look for it now :)

Thank you, I have mite shampoo on the list already, syringes I can get from the vet... I have found some cream for bumblefoot and also sores from acidity that they can get from eating tomatoes and apple. That might come in handy.

Ofcourse I hope no one thinks that I will diagnose them myself and treat them, I will go vets first and then do what I need to do.

This is why I am saving up money until feb/march so I can give them a proper happy life in which I do not have to worry about money. (Even though it feels like forever until I have my lovely piggies :0)

Please be aware that skin conditions definatly need vet treatment as I believe only lice and fungal infections can be got rid of with shampoo, mites need a topical treatment with a special active ingredient. :)

But its great your doing all this research.

Thanks Connie, of course! Thanks for your advice, I am definately going to go to the vets everytime something is wrong. This is why I am waiting for months until I have them, I'd be in tears if I lost them because of my stupidity and I wouldn't forgive myself. Vets are there for a reason and the piggies will rely on me and it's my job to make sure they are happy and healthy.
