Neck Abscess, Oral Thrush And Hand Feeding!

I have also heard good things about Zithromax and abcesses, including one in the exact location as your boy's abcess.
 
I would certainly ask for Zithromax for abscess post op treatment. It didn't do anything for Minky's head tilt, but that'a a different thing.
 
Hi, I agree Simon Maddock would be the best vet to see. The itrefungal should clear up his thrush without the addition of oral gel. Antifungal drugs are quite potent and as any oral gel will be consumed I would be concerned about him having both at the same time.
it is great he is starting to eat, i hope this continues. There is always the possibilty to bear in mind that if he has not been eating enough and having had an operation he may have become dehydrated in a more clinical way . If this is the case he may need subcut fluids which will also help rebalance his electrolites.
As he is on rimadyl he should not be given metacam at the time. x

It depends on the cause of the headtilt. I have just had a fantastic result with a temporary resident here, who was very poorly, dental issues and serious head tilt. The Zithromax really sorted it out, and he has recently returned home.
 
I was thinking the same thing, the oral gel would be soothing on his mouth but you don't want to double up on the anti-fungals. I wonder if something like Calgel would help? I am not sure if there is a veterninary alternative to this I could mention instead? The Dioralyte he is having should help with any dehydration issues but yes if it was really bad then sub-cut fluids are a good idea.

Metacam is a nonsteroidal anti inflamatory not a steroid. I agree it is a great pain killer tho.
Steroids can be harmful to guinea pigs as they surpress the imune system and should only be used, if at all, in extreme situations.
 
It may have something to do with the time-scale. Minky was on Baytril for about 6 weeks prior to the Zithromax. I think the damage could have been irreversible by then. She's now been off meds completely for 3 weeks and is no better or worse. She's actually gained weight 6 of the last 7 weeks too. She has a good life with her 3 companions & I'll be happy if she's like this for the rest of her life. She's still bossy when she wants to be.

Minky also had monthly steroid injections for 3 months & these had no effect.
 
Bit of an update on Little Man, he started eating very small amounts yesterday: some cellery leaves, a small piece of cucumber and a piece of spinach. Also went out and got him some different types of hay which he then proceeded to tuck in to. He had his last Rymadyl tablet last night so he is now just on the itrafungal twice a day.

We went with mums home made food for a while but have now gone back to critical care. Droppings look fine although he squeaks when pooping so might try to flush his system with cranberry today. Were not able to get 120ml food down him a day as by the end of a feeding session he is falling asleep in my lap still chewing. On the plus side his weight is staying around 914 so not loosing or gaining.

Stiches due out on Saturday and looking healthy. He is definitely showing an interest in his food but its the sore mouth stopping him so i will see about getting some of that oral gel. Shall also logon pc and get some pics up. Thanks x
 
Glad he ate the fancy hay. Is there a specific reasion you want to flush with cranberry? I would have thought water or even Dioralyte would have been better.
 
Well, little man was doing loads better, eating on his own, gaining weight and had his stiches out last weekend no problems. Tonight i pick him up to find a gaping wound on his neck where the vets have missed a stich and its still in his neck! The stich is coming out and is now hanging out of his neck! Taking him to Vedra at CCT tomorrow to look at but furious with the vet! Grr! Rant over!

So i have separated him again and put him in confinement with a dab of savlon on the wound and just keeping an eye on him. On the plus side it doesn't seem to bother him too much other than itching a little xx
