Hello all,

It feels like I'm only ever on here if i actually want something, sorry. : ( I'm just currently in need of a little moral support. One of my piggies, Onion, has been found to have ovarian cysts. It's come up quickly and we only found it due to her being a little quiet and not herself and palpating it in her abdomen. Shes only 3 and a half, pretty young to be getting them to be honest and showing no other symptoms (like the usual hairloss etc). Took her into work Friday straight after discovering the lump in her abdomen and we scanned to find a 3-4cm cyst. :'( Shes been passing blood also which suggested she has some uterine changes too.

Due to all of this it looks like the best course of action will be the surgical route. Just worrying about my little girl a bit. We will have the best team to do it though, two specialists and myself doing the anesthesia (i prefer to do my own). Hopefully we'll get it sorted this week, just worried about her. Shes still bright and happy, lets hope this is a good sign pre op.

Thanks for all replies in advance.

xx.

Am sorry she is poorly, my Maddie had a cyst recently too and is only about 2 and a half.

Hope the op goes well, must be reassuring knowing you can be there the whole time.

Fingers firmly crossed; it sounds like a spay is the best route! At least you can be there and don't have to suffer through this horrible wait, which is always the worst part of an operation.

My 5 year old Cariad has made it through hers 10 months ago, so I hope that all will go well for Onion and you!

My late sow, Rosie had a mammary tumour removed last September and recovered really well despite her being almost 8! Sadly as it was cancerous it did come back so I made the decision to have her PTSed mostly due to her age and the increasing risk during surgery. But as your girl is fairly young for a pig I'd bet she has a fighting chance and it will help knowing she has her mummy there with her. Being there is one of the pros of being a veterinary nurse (hoping to train soon myself!) Keep strong xx

I wish your piggy well. I think one of the most things the forum does is to enable us to give each other moral support, please dont be sorry for asking you know you have given the same to others, all our lives get very busy at times :)

Hug hugs x Sounds like the op is the best choice to make, hope it goes well. Love to little Onion x x

Sorry to hear this Abi. It sounds like she is in good hands. Good luck Onion.

surgery is always scary but it sounds like she is in really good hands. all the best for her. x

I'm really sorry. At least you have a good understanding of the process. Though it must be very frightening to be there during an operation on your pet.

Thank you all for your lovely words and support. Onion is at work with me today and we're going to theatre this morning. Keeping my fingers and toes crossed and hopefully my own heart rate under control lol. Will let you all know how it goes.

Thank you all again. I love this forum, I can be away for ages and people are still so wonderfully lovely.

X

Good luck for today. Like the rest, I'm sure your good care has given her the best fighting chance :-)

Best of luck and many hugs and kisses to the dear xx

Hope it goes well, let us know how Onion gets on x x

Hello again all,

I'm afraid it isn't the best news to give you. Unfortunately I had to let my little Onion go off to the bridge this morning. We anesthetised her and opened her up to find oddly not cystic ovaries but a blockage in her bile duct, causing a huge distension of her gall bladder, it was massive. This must have been what we saw on her ultrasound on Friday. (She didn't sit still much for it) This problem has never been seen/recorded in guinea pigs and the prognosis is extremely poor. It must have been terribly painful but even this morning Onion was whizzing about on the examination table. Damn these piggies for not showing us there sickness! It was decided that in her best interests to euthanise her under anaesthetic. I'm pretty devastated and it was a bit of a shock, but I'm happy that I did the right thing and let her go before she suffered.

Rest in peace and run free my little darling. Will miss you terribly and so will your companions Little Miss and Merlin. :'(

Thank you all again. Your all wonderfully lovely.

Xx

I'm so sorry, what a shock for you. Night night little Onion.

RIP little buddy, so sad to hear, run over rainbow bridge happily; every piggie in the world wishes you the best xoxo

I am so sorry to hear about poor Onion. You did the right thing - it's a heartbreaking decision to have to make.

A shorter life being loved, well cared for and happy is infinitely better than a longer one in an uncaring/cruel environment. RIP little one and hugs for you x

I am so sorry that you lost Onion, she is sleeping peacefully now, you did the best thing for her in her situation, just hard to accept she has gone I suppose.
RIP sweetheart.

I am so sorry Abi, you 100% made the right call for Onion such a brave decision to make. Huge hugs x x

RIP Onion

I am ever so sorry! Poor girl! What a nasty shock for you! :(

RIP Onion; you have given her a happy life. Letting her go was the kindest thing under the circumstances. It is the kind of decision we all fear most.

I'm so sorry to hear, Abi. You made the right choice and I'm sure wherever she is now shes grateful for such a selfless gift. Lots of hugs sent your way xx
