On Sunday I unfortunately lost my beautiful piggy Aggie.

I'm completely devastated but more for her Sister Ziggy who keeps looking for her and trying to find her.

Although the thought of getting a new piggy makes me feel like I'm replacing Aggie I know that Ziggy needs a friend.

My main query is when looking at rescue homes they all suggest putting a castrated male with her?

They were two sisters and I always thought that two female piggies are best together?

Can anyone help me?

thank you,

Sally

Hi sally,
I am so sorry for your loss. A neutered boar or a sow is fine. It is your choice. The good thing about a rescue is Ziggy can choose her own friend. This will prevent a fall out.

Sorry for your loss :( I agree take her to a good rescue and let her pick her own friend be it a female or a neutered male :)

Either a neutered boy or a girl will be fine but it's best if you can take her dating to make sure she chooses one she likes. There is a fab, rescue in St Albans, Hazelcroft Rescue!

Hi and welcome!

I am sorry that it is under such circumstances. Unlike us humans, guinea pigs don't grieve any less, but they usually mourn for less long.

The best way is to take Ziggy dating at a good rescue so she herself can make her choice; Hazelcroft in St. Albans is your closest recommended one, but you can find more in our rescue locator on the bar at the top.

I have dated bereaved middle aged sows of mine at various rescues with both other sows and neutered boars, each time with great success and with getting a very loving relationship out of it. The main point is that the liking is mutual; gender and age are secondary.

It is normal to be afraid that the new piggy will replace your lost one, but that is actually not the case. Each bond is unique, like a ribbon that is tied to different place in your heart. No two ribbons are ever the same. Don't force yourself having to feel much for the newbie at first. That will come in its own time, when you yourself are ready for it and usually without you really noticing. The important bit right now is to look after Ziggy's piggy needs.

You are most welcome to post a tribute to Aggie in our Rainbow pets section and share your loss and memories with us of you wish to. You can now just drag and drop pictures into your post by using the uploading facility underneath your post.

Thank you,

I wasn't sure she would get on with another piggy as her and aggie were together for three years :(

Ziggy just seems so lost without her and I couldn't bare loosing her too.

I will contact the rescue centre as this sounds like the best option so thank you!
