Hello! I'm new to the forum! I have a question, my parents said I can rescue one more Guinea Pig. I currently have two males that I rescued from an irresponsible person. I can either get a male and try to introduce him to my current males -but I don't really want 2 against 1 new one- or I can get a female -I really want to get a female, but I don't want her to be lonely- But I can only get one more at the moment so I need help deciding which route is the best route. There is a free male piggy that I was offered, that will find another person if I don't answer quick. I need advice. Thank you. @Wiebke I saw that you were in notable members so I tagged you and am hoping you can provide some advice. :)

Are the males neutered? If they are, I think you should get a female as they are less territorial.

How big of a cage can you provide them? The preferred amount for 3 male pigs is 16 square feet. The preferred amount for 3 female pigs is 13 square feet. I’d go with 16 either way, though, because you have 2 males. To provide this cage, you can combine two Midwest cages (Guinea Habitat Guinea Habitat | eBay) or get a 2x6 c&c cage from guineapigcagesstore.com or candcguineapigcages.co.uk.

No, the males are not neutered. I am currently building a 2x6 c and c cage with loft. I have a Guinea Pig habitat but am unhappy with the way the bottom stays dirty. That is why I'm building a c and c cage. Since they aren't neutered what do you suggest? Since she would have to live by herself.

Definitely get another male. Breeding can be very dangerous for the female.

Yes, if I got a female she would live in a totally separate cage in my room. The boys are in the living room. How hard is it to introduce 1 male to 2 bonded males?

A trio of boats very rarely works, there is a possibility that the original pair will fall out so you could end up with three singles! :( Sorry, but I’ve been there before and had fall outs with three boys and so have many other people on here. Saying that though, some have had successful trio boys, but it is rare.

Thank you for the advice. I am leaning toward not even risking trying it. If anything I will just hold off until the perfect one comes along and I'll be completely ready and be more knowledgeable. Or I will just wait until I graduate next year so I'm not limited to just getting one.

@Tim is correct a trio of boars rarely works. If you want to get more piggies you could get your boys neutered and then get them a sow each. 2 boars and sows together rarely works as the boars fight over the sows. I am very lucky in the fact I have managed this but it is very rare. I am on constant watch to make sure that the boys don't fall out. I think it works as the boys were VERY well bonded before being neutered (and they are so laid back they are practically horizontal!) and going in with the girls. I also have a VERY dominant sow who won't let anyone step out of line. The boys were also used to girlies being around too.

As others have already said 3 boars is mostly likely to end in a fight, and the worst case scenario is that you will end up with 3 single boars!
If you have a bonded pair I wouldn't do anything to upset that delicate relationship.
You can not add a girl to your current boars as they would fight over her, and she would also become pregnant, which is not good for anyone involved.

To be totally honest if you are only allowed one more piggy then you might be best to wait.
Piggies really do best in pairs, so until you have permission to get another pair then it is kinder to avoid adding a single piggy who will have to live alone.
