Hi,

So my piggies are about 9 weeks old and I noticed today that one of them had blood in her urine, I don't know if shes in heat or if this is an illness?
She doesn't appear to be in pain but she is very jumpy unlike the other and doesn't like to be touched.
Any ideas? I was thinking of contacting the farmer we got her from? What do you think? I know they say to look out for illness when you get them home but I have no idea what it is. The urine is light pinkish in colour.

I'm worried :(

How long have you had them? Has she been fed something like beetroot? My friends piggies had their wee stained pink when they ate it. Otherwise please take her to the vet. If in doubt that is always best. Piggies are very good at hiding pain.

ps. Just for future reference something like this should be in the Health and Illness section of the forum

Pigs do not pass blood when in season, like a human or a dog for example.

You should get her booked in to see a good vet tomorrow morning - go armed with a urine sample if you can.

Thank you so so much, what a plonker! I didn't realise beetroot could affect their urine and they had tiny little strips of beetroot in some of their salad yesterday! Phew! Happy piggy mum again lol :))
Plus thanks Amanda I didn't realise that was the case either, can't tell you how relieved I am :)

Fingers crossed it was just the beetroot, but please keep a close eye on her, weigh her daily to make sure she is not losing weight and the first sign on squealing when weeing or pooing, she should really see a vet.

xx

I've also found that red pepper sometimes causes pink/reddish urine.

If you notice blood in the urine again (and you haven't fed beetroot, pepper etc.) or, as Toffeewoffee said, if there are any signs of pain when weeing/pooing, then please take your piggy to the vet. Blood in the urine can be sign of a urinary tract infection (UTI) which would need treating with antibiotics.
