Hi I wasn't sure where to put this.

We had a boar peruvian piggy who died a few weeks ago (aged 6). We took him as a rescue piggy on his own and we would like to take on another piggy. Either a lone boar or two sows.

I have found a rescue centre that has taken in lots and lots of piggies. Some have already had to be put down as they had so many. They came from a breeder who allowed them to inbreed many times and kept them in cramped conditions. They have not been handled at all.

We went to see them yesterday - they are a bit sorry looking. Many had skin conditions from only being fed dried food and kept in the dark. The one I liked the look of allowed itself to be picked up grudgingly but was fine when I held it, so squeaking yet but didn't fuss or bite.

BUT I don't really want to take on a piggy with lots of health problems as I don't really have the money for lots of expensive vets bills. He seemed ok - very small for approx 6 months old, but fur was ok - long haired with no bald patches. Needed a good cut, groom and possibly a bath. Eyes seemed a bit small but teeth looked ok and no extra toes.

So really I wanted to know - from those with more experience than me - is this piggy likely to have further serious health issues. And also is it likely that with some TLC and gentle encouragement he could be tamed? I would like a family pet and am just a bit concerned that he will always be very very timid and worse may start to bite.

Many thanks

Louise

Hi Louise

Yes they can be tamed. I had 2 that had never been held. Here is a blog I wrote about them

http://tamingguineapigs.blogspot.com/

One of them is the tamest of nearly all my pigs now the other is reluctant but doesn't bite. It's a wonderful feeling to have looked after them

I did fungal, mites and lice treatment on them (I do it for all mine every 3 months) but other than that neither have seen the vet and they were in a smiliar situation - bred and bred and bred.

Very worthwhile cause.
