My guinea pig start drinking a lot more for the past few days. What could that mean? I'm worried

Hi, Sometimes a increase in drinking can be down to things like warmer weather or the heating being on within a room and piggies feeling warmer.

Drinking more could be a sign of a UTI but more telling signs would be crying when weeing or pooing. Are you weighing them regulary?

Do you give them veg everyday? That usually makes them drink less, so if you've decreased their veg they may drink more.

Look out for signs of pain whilst urinating, blood in urine, weigh daily to check for signs of weight loss

I noticed mine drinking more on the weekend and realised I'd whacked the heating up a bit high! We were all too hot! Could be just that if you've done the same with this awful weather?

Mine drink less when new bedding(hay) goes in so when fed lots of veggies they don't

My little guy does that too. I don't understand how the newspaper can be that tasty!

As others have said, an increase in thirst can be due to an number of things. I have to say my boys go through phases of drinking large amounts of water then hardly any at all. Things like this could increase thirst...
- the central heating on
- warmer weather
- less watery veg being fed
- a hay eating spree
- a pellet/dry food eating spree
- behavioural

I would keep a close eye on your piggie. How old is your piggie? Older pigs may be prone more to medical problems but this is not necessarily the case. Dont start panicking unless your piggie is drinking more than 100ml per kg in body wieght every day and is showing any other signs of illness, such as fluffec up fur, bad cost condition, weight loss, loss of appitite etc.

x.
