Hare is my short-haired guinea pig. I want to give him 'first aid' of some sort so that he'll feel better until I can take him to the vet. I will call his vet tomorrow and schedule a check-up and/or surgery.

I know that some of you might wonder why I am not taking him to the vet now, but I live in the Philippines where human healthcare is sucky and animal healthcare is even worse. Local rescue shelters have only cat/dog vets. My pets had a 'regular' vet but he killed my cat (either by accident or neglect) who was just supposed to be spayed (she was 100% in good health when we brought her into his clinic) so I am not trusting him with my guinea pig. I found a very good exotic animals clinic and their hospital/pet hotel which is a 5-hour drive from my home- unfortunately, today is November 1 which, in our country, is an official holiday and there are no vets in the clinic nor the hospital (I have called them yesterday, the attendants who are taking care of the patients at the hospital said that vets will come in by November 2).

My dilemma is this: Hare has not been able to move his hind legs since yesterday. At first, only one leg could not be moved; he was very angry and loud, when I tried to put him in a non-awkward position, he would struggle so I thought it was a sprained leg. I checked for signs of broken bones as well but there were none. There was no reason for him to be sprained or hurt anyway since, after I cleaned his cage and gave him food, no one had been close to his cage. Later on I checked again when he was less angry and he did not seem to be in pain when I touched the leg although he would get annoyed when I picked him up. In the evening, he could not move both of his hind legs. He kept himself up on his front legs and he did this weird thing where his head would slowly go up and then he would nod- heads goes up, nod... repeatedly. All of his limbs have good blood circulation (not bluish or gray in any area), his nose and mouth are pink. He is eating from time to time, more in the evening and early morning which, as I've noticed is a sign that he is unwell. When he is well, he eats all day long. When he is unwell, he eats only in specific times of the day. I give him calcium, vitamin C and acidophilus in separate times of the day while he looks ills. He is also pooping nonstop (but it is solid, just smaller than his usual poop) and peeing from time to time, and has a light fever. Is this paralysis? A sprained leg? Stroke? What can I do to make him feel better? Any first aid that I can give until I take him to the vet?

A bit more info: He has an abscess on his back so we have been to the vet's for two weeks. First he gave Baytril because Hare had fever and was fighting the infection; this left his urine permanently colored orange. Next, he gave Prednisone to try and make the inflammation go down. Hare is still currently on Prednisone. They said that they would call me once the blood tests were in and the surgeon had a complete diagnosis. I am worried that the abscess might have gone septic.

He is my one and only guinea pig. I don't want to lose him.

I'm sorry to hear of the problems you are having with your pig and can understand the frustration you must be feeling in not being able to access veterinary attention for him.

It sounds as if he is in a lot of pain and needs to see a vet as a matter of urgency. He is eating and drinking which is a good sign but he must be suffering terribly.

I am very surprised that no-one else on this forum has replied to your very detailed post and I hope that someone with more knowledge than me will come along soon with some advice.

I hope Hare gets well soon.

Hi There -

Unfortunately we are a UK forum, most members are in bed at 2.38am or don't have any experience to answer your question.

I personally don't have the medical knowledge to advise, I can only advise you to go to a vet but I know your waiting till tomorrow.

If you post on GuineaLynx - health and illness board if you haven't already as they have much more medical experience.

Good Luck.

You're worry that the infection has returned is unfortunately a strong one, the steroid he is on suppresses the immune system.

As you are unable to get to the vet hospital, please telephone them and get advice - as they know his history and medications. They should be able to prescribe appropriately and issue a presription via fax, email or have send the meds out direct.

Wishing you the very best of luck.

Thanks for your replies. I have been reading this forum and Guinea Lynx for ideas on how to make my cavy happy, and things to watch out for so that he won't get sick. I did post in Guinea Lynx and no one seems to have encountered this problem before.

Hare does not seem to be in pain, unlike yesterday. His fever had gone down and he ate a lot around lunch time. He is still unable to move his hind legs; sometimes he tries to move around using his front legs only but he prefers curling up into a ball on his towel. When I put him on my lap he laid down on his belly and looked exhausted, probably because he did not get much sleep overnight (neither did I). He jerks his head from time to time and I am worried that he might be having seizures.

I called the vet hospital today asking for a prescription or emergency check-up but the only vet who was available for such situations was a canine/feline specialist. The exotic animals surgeon is out of town and won't be back until Monday... but the vet who has been checking Hare and giving him medicine might be available tomorrow. I will call them up at 8am in the morning.

This really is frustrating and it happened at such a bad week too... Filipinos tend to go on long vacations around November 1- that excludes my family but unfortunately includes almost everyone else :(

Right now all I can do is to make Hare feel comfortable and to make sure that he gets enough vitamins, food and water. If a guinea pig is having seizures, should I keep him away from me to avoid scaring him, or should I keep him close? If he is paralyzed and it is not a sprain, should I keep his legs in the normal position when he sleeps (bended underneath him) or stretched out? He is totally unable to move his hind legs and cannot control his bowel movements, so I'm thinking this is paralysis and not just a sprain.

- and I'm sorry if I type so much >__<

Be patient with Guinea Lynx, they should be able to help once more members are online. It's US based so a different timezone to this forum.

I wish there was more help I could be but it's so difficult to give advice on such a complex case. You seem to be doing all that you can under the circumstances, if your piggy is normally happy for you to be close then it should not be a problem now and you can keep a close eye on him.

I would keep his legs in their normal position most of the time, not stretched out for too long.

This sounds to me like an infection. He needs urgent medical care and medication.

In the abscence of a vet, I would google anything that can give you more information.

I've read that for paralysis effects the hind legs - you could look at researching calcium supplements. I've just read this in a book, I am not an expert at all. I'm a first time guinea pig owner with books that I refer to for guinea pig illnesses. But maybe look at paralysis and see if this fits his symptons?

I really hope he gets better soon.

I am not a vet but I can try.
SAID like prednison don't work for guinea pigs. If you want to stop an infection you need antibiotics with NSAID.
Baytril is oké, you wait untill the abscess is ripe and then open it up and keep it open and clean for a week.
I don't understand why you give calcium just like that and you are giving acidophilus out of yoghurt? That isnt good either and only necessary during antibiotics.
I don't know what's the problem with the legs.

The prednisone was prescribed by the vet. It is also on Guinea Lynx's list of meds for guinea pigs.

The acidophilus that I'm giving isn't from yogurt. It's powder from a capsule that I mix with water and it keeps Hare's appetite up. He had just finished antibiotics the previous week and the vet also prescribed probiotics along with the prednisone to make sure that Hare's gut flora is ok.

Calcium, I've only given it orally starting Monday when I noticed that Hare could not move his hind legs. Some paralysis in guinea pigs seem to be linked with lack of calcium, and as I was looking for some type of first aid while I could not take him to the vet yet, that's what I did.

Yes it's on the list but normally not given for infections.

Maybe your pig has muscle pains from the prednison.

I don't know the answer to your questions BUT I want to wish you and Hare the best of luck getting through this.

Your situation sounds very frustrating and anxious.

Probiotic is right with antibiotics and liquid calcium for a few days shouldn't hurt.

Best wishes

It does sound like the infection/abcess in the spinal area could be the cause and obviously vet attention is now extremely urgent. Hopefully this post will help as I have been through a similar experience recently

I should add the following

I withdrew the Willow's steroids when he became ill

Don't give too much Calcium - it' extremely important you stick to Peter Gurneys recommendations and NOT exceed them

You must NOT give any non-steroidal anti-infammatories whilst your piggie is on steroids - it's either one or the other and you need a 24hour period to get the steroid out of his system

Fingers crossed for you both

The last dose of prednisone was given more than 24 hours ago because that was the prescribed dose (I give it in the evening so when I wrote this thread, Hare was still technically 'on' Prednisone as I've stated on the first post which was posted in the morning here). The vet knows that I have not given him any antibiotics or prednisone within 24 hours, just the vitamins and probiotics.

I just got home. Hare has to be hospitalized for at least 24 hours to stabilize his breathing. The attending vet's initial diagnosis is similar to what you've said; his abscess had grown and the prednisone was not able to keep the inflammation down so there are two possibilities- it could be an infection that got into his spine or the abscess is pressing against the spine (the attending vet thought that the latter was more likely). He currently needs oxygen but he tries to eat and drink normally although he is almost completely immobile. After he's stabilized, the vet will start giving him medication as needed.

Thanks for all the well wishes.

I don;t regret any of the last few months...the vets bills, the treatments, the sleepless nights..and the stress of it all....because Willow at all times showed me by his determination that he wants the chance to live. He has never once refused to swallow whatever was put into his mouth..

I definitely feel the same way. As long as Hare keeps fighting, I'll give it all I've got too.

Just wanted to send a message wishing you all the best and for a speedy recovery for Hare. It sounds like you're doing your absolute best for him. Will keep my fingers crossed x

Hare seemed to be getting better this morning.

The vet hospital just contacted me. Hare passed away.

Thanks for the help and well wishes. I hope that this incident will help someone somewhere... somehow.

Really sorry to hear about Hare. Thinking of you both x
