My 5 year old boar had dental surgery on Tuesday. He had one of the bottom front teeth removed after it split. He came home yesterday evening. I was not given any special food or medicine. He is not eating at all. What can I feed him. Will baby food be OK?

Did your vet not give you any pain relief for him. If not please contact your vet and ask for some urgently. Your piggy is probably in a lot of pain.

If he is not eating you will need to step in with syringe feeding. There is a guide showing how to do this on the forum. You should be able to get Critical Care from your vet. Mushed up pellets will work until you can get Critical Care.

I'm sure one of the forum experienced health experts will be along soon with more detailed information.

Hi and welcome!

Which country are you in and how dental-savvy is your vet? We have members and enquiries from all over the world; our advice can differ quite a bit because of that.

Has your piggy been given painkillers? They are very important because the mouth is very sore from overgrowth/ptentially dislocated jawa after any treatment. Gut stimulants to help the digestive system impacted by not eating properly are also strongly recommend. (Emeprid and ranitine/zantac).

Please support feed with recovery formula like timothy based and vitamin C reinforced Critical Care. You can supplement with baby food but please keep in mind that over 80% of the food intake should be hay and that veg should make only 10-15% of the diet in order to not cause more problems in the digestion.
Here is our illustrated syringe feeding guide. It also contains a chapter of tips for dental piggies that are still able to eat partially:

I'm from south Africa. We don't have critical care here. He was kept in hospital Tuesday and Wednesday. The vet gave him painkillers and fed him with a syringe. He was send home without any medicine or special food. I thought of mashing his pellets and feeding to him with a syringe. Would that be better than baby food?

Thank you. The post operative guides helped a lot. If there's no improve i will take him back to the vet.

I would mash his pellets for now and syringe feed that.Could you get some critical care from Amazon?

You really do need to get him some pain relief from your vet. Otherwise he will continue to not eat.

Thank you for your help. I will go back to the vet today and get him what he needs. He looks a lot better allready
