Today i was giving one og my piggies a bath. They are both dark except George, who has a white stripe. I noticed some brown things in his fur that i think may be mites. My mum said they may just be off the hay but I'm not sure. I used Mite, lice n flea shampoo on them straight away but I'm not sure if its worked because they are too dark to see. What should i do?

Thanks :)

Hello, it sounds like lice, mites are under the skin and they can't be seen with the naked eye :) The thing that I see most recommended, and have used myself, is Lice'n'easy shampoo by Gorgeous Guineas. It's really good stuff and doesn't contain chemicals :) Make sure you wash or change all their bedding after treatment, and do the follow up shampoo a week later to make sure and get the lice eggs.
I asked the vet about lice in hay and he says that's a myth, which kind of makes sense as the lice need a guinea pig to survive, hope that helps x

Don;t panic....but we need to ask a lot more questions before giving any advice. If you can see something - it's either lice or a skin problem (scurf/dandruff). Mites can;t be seen - but it doesn;t mean they are not there.

These issues are easily sorted....but it;s important you take the appropriate measures to make sure the problem doesn;t come back anytime soon.

So .....Your starter for 10:
Are your guineas indoor or outdoor?
If indoor are they kept in centrally heated room?
I take it you have two - do they live together or separately? What sex are they? How old are they?
Were the brown things moving or stationary?
What brand of shampoo did you use?
Do they have any thinning/bald patches of hair?
Do they have any scabs (eg on their ears?)
Where did you get your hay from and what brand is it (if any)?

There'll be more questions depending upon your answers so we can do this more efficiently over the phone if you;d prefer. Pm me for my phone number.

Okay well if you need my number after i answer please let me know

My guinea pigs are indoor at the moment but they did live outside for a few months back last summer. The room they are in has a radiator opposite where their cages are kept, its only a small room though. They use to live together but then they had a really bad fight which caused blood so i seperated them a good month or so ago. They are both boys and just over 1 year old. I didnt see any of them move they just seemed to be stuck on their hairs. They have no bald patches and the only time they have had much hair loss is when i bought them inside but i think this was because they had a thicker coat for outside. They have no scabs, the only time one ever had a scab was after the fight. I get their hay from asda and its called my little friend meadow hay. They have this at all times and occasionally get timothy hay which i get from pets at home

Thanks so much for helping its really worrying me :)

Thanks for your answers .it's good news they are indoor pigs....if there is no "movement" to "the bits" it could be just "scurf" which indicates either static mites, fungal or just dry skin/coat moulting....

My piggies get regular "scurf"...and every time I think it must be fungal or mites...but my vet tests them and says...nothing wrong ......so it;s just down to them moulting from change of temperature or drying out through lack of humidity in a CH house.... or maybe they just need some extra Vit C to tide them over the winter.....

.I will PM you my phone number to discuss further

Thanks as far as i can see its all gone now. I may have just been over reacting and it could have been just dirt or something. If i notice anything else i will let you know :)

I've done this before and gone in to a blind panic thinking my piggies had creepy crawlies lol but it was the loose bits from the hay :red

yeah thats what i think it was because they just flick off really easy lol if it was bugs i think they would grip on a bit
