All my piggies have always been tidy. When i clean them out they look nice for a few days till clean out day again. L8ly all the piggies (except Lincoln) have been pulling there newspaper everywhere. The cages look like a bombs hit it an hour after ive cleaned it out. For some reason once theve done this the room smells worse, like they havent been cleaned out in weeks. its driving me mad and stressin me out. does anyone else have this problem? what do you do to combat it? i have tried fleece but dont like it so I'm back on megazorb. please help!

Hiya,
I would personally try using carefresh bedding if your having a problem with the smell of your cage.
Carefresh bedding helps combat the smell of piggies an awful lot, you can purchase this at Pets At Home.
(I dont use newspaper in my cage as I'm worried about them eating it.)
I would also try not putting the hay all over the cage if you do, with my piggies what i do is put the hay in a hay rack giving them plenty to get out, as if your piggies wee on the hay it can leave an awful smell behind unfortunately.
As for the mess they make i think thats just normal my cage is always messy when they start running around after each other :)
Also if you have a lot of piggies you may have to clean the cage more often than once a week.

Help this helps :)

maybe they are getting used to their cages and want something else to occupy them?
My rabbits do exactly the same thing out if they are kept in the wendyhouse and not let outside and they have to find something to get up to and cause me more hassle rolleyes:))

With regards to putting hay all over the cage...
I do it and have done for many years...

They only smell if you dont give them enough hay so you would need to coat the bottom and put a big double, piggy height pile, for them to burrow in...and then top up in the morning and evening...
i clean them out every other day but on occasion every other two days if I'm busy... As long as i top them up they dont smell in the slightest. You do need to put a good newspaper base down though roughly 3 days of The Times main newspaper does 3 piggies for 3days without getting soggy...:))

I personally prefer my pigs to live a bit more naturally and pigs LOVE to burrow and make nests so hay does fine for me :) (and i dont have to spend loads on tunnels or megazorb etc...)

thanks. i put hay down for them all the time as thy have a sleeping compartment. the sleeping compartment i clean out everyday as it gets messy. the rest of the cage i clean out every 2-3 days (i never leave them a week it would be awful). they have tiubes to play with a lots of toys. its soooo annoying. i find carefresh really expensive but i will give it ago. thanks

It is a pain when they decide to be reckless for the hell of it! Just think of all the fun they are having when they're doing it though...:))

Yeah thats the only problem i find with carefresh is the price but it has odur control which you wouldnt find with wood shavings, plus woodshavings gets stuck in my long haired piggies fur!

I just pile up carefresh bedding they love to snuggle in it and hay is good for rabbits especially when theyre kept outside in the cold, personally i dont give my piggies hay to snuggle up in due to the wee absorbant it really smells bad :(

Carefresh bedding does wonders tho ! I would never use another bedding :)

have you tried vetbed? I do think though that they are telling you they want more stimulation. Have you tried hiding there food or making them work for it?

we get toilet roll inners and put food in there and then stuff each end with hay very tightly. They can smell the food and have to work out how to get it. It is also amusing to watch. You can also try hanging it from top of cage so every time they bite it moves.
Hide it in different parts of the cage.

I am sure others will come up with some ideas as well.

thanks. i do put hay on toilet rolls but never thought of food in the middle thanks. I brought some lunchbags from pamered piggies and thy loved ripping through the bag to the goodies but they soon got bored lol. x

I do that as well. I gather up the toilet roll inners from work because they are thicker cardboard and stuff them with hay ... for my piggies, of course, not my work colleagues. Now there is a thought! :))

I also have a wooden thingy ... no sure what it is called ... that I bought from P&H, with lots of holes in it. Might be designed for a hamster or mouse to run through but I stuff hay in the holes and my piggies love pulling it out.

Some pigs are naturally messy. Tearing up newspaper and upturning food dishes. When you make them all clean and nice and then 5 minutes later they are made a mess, it is annoying. It usually happens with young pigs though ... my OAP's just lie about and wee! rolleyes:))
