All of our 6 piggies has got this white thing on their bodies.
The vet told us it's scab and they gave us some drops to put on their neck etc, and we'll have to wait two weeks until we can give them their second and last treatment.
The problem is that it's gotten so bad on two of our piggies, the brown boy here has it all around his eye and one of our sows has a huge mark on her nose, which she keeps scratching on. Basically looks like a bloodbath on her face and I feel so helpless! Isn't there any cream or antibiotics I can put on to make it less painful for them? What if the medicine won't work and it just keeps getting worse? Btw, this all happened very rapidly. At the end of the week we first noticed this, it had grown two times bigger, and started spreading. Does anyone have any tips for us? Even just an opinion is very helpful to us right now, I'm absolutely lost

hi i am sorry to hear about your guinea pigs having this scab. I have heard that bag balm is very good for it. just rub it around where the scab is. sorry i cant help anymore. I would also suggest looking on the internet . that's the best advice.
hope this helped :)

Hi, I agree that looks like fungal and most likely Ringworm.

Have a look at this link

http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/ringworm-hygiene-and-pictures.115402/

Treatment would be with Imaverol dips or the oral medication Itrafungol, or even both for bad cases. I would also recommend asking for pain relief. If they are scratching you can loosley tape their feet with something like medical tape which can stop them doing so much damage but not so tight as to cut off the circulation.

I notice you are in Norway, do you know of any other vets you can go to?

Ringworm is usually tested for by producing a culture from a scraping and is the only type of fungal that tends to show up when the standard type of culture is done.

Here are the UK links to the products you would need which you can hopefully show your vet:

Imaverol:

http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Enilconazole-100mgml-100ml/Productinfo/ENILCON/

Itrafungol:

http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Itrafungol-Oral-Solution-52ml-POM/Productinfo/ITRAFUNGOL/

I know Hyperdrug can ship outside of the UK but if you could get these products in Norway it would be quicker.

I agree with @sport_billy; it looks very much like a fungal infection and rather like ringworm. :(

Please be very careful when handling him and any stuff he has come into contact with! Ringworm is one of the few things that transmits to other pets and humans.

If you cannot get hold of imaverol dip and itrafungol systemic fungal medicine online or via your vet (seeing that you are in Norway and have obviously not got access to a knowledgeable exotics vet), you can try malaseb shampoo or a human dandruff shampoo like nizoral that contains ketoconazole or a similar well known anti-fungal active ingredient. You can additionally treat topically with a vet or human anti-fungal cream like canesten 2% (against thrush). We normally do no longer recommend that unless you cannot get hold of our recommended more effective treatments; just apply thinly 3-4 times a day.

You can print out the links for your vet if necessary.

PS: Your vet is obviously treating for mange mites, which this clearly isn't! I have linked in a link that details the differences between a fungal and a mites problem.

Oh my god, what can happen if it isn't treated fast? The vet did a scratch test and couldn't tell for sure if it was scab, but she thought that was it, at least. I took a picture of the sow, does it look like fungus?

Thank you all so soo much! Just ordered a new apptment with the same vet, and I told her everything you guys wrote down. They will test for fungus this time and see if we get any results. Crossing my fingers and hoping they have some sort of treatment for it. The problem about Norway is the lack of knowledge about these things. We really don't have that much medicine to choose from either.

Best of luck!I am thinking of you!

You may brace yourself that tests can come back negative if you are dealing with another variety of fungal and not specifically ringworm, as most tests only test for that. Please raise that issue with your vet. It would also be good to start treatment asap and not wait until the tests come back.

I hope that your vet can get hold of some systemic fungal as the most surefire way to treat. Itrafungol has originally been devloped for cats (and dogs, too) for instance. The dose given to a guinea pig is 0.05ml once daily per 100g of body weight.

Yayy went to the vet yesterday and took a new test! I'm starting the treatment now even though we don't have the results yet, at least we're getting somewhere!
But I have another question. I noticed one of the sows, the mother of the babies actually, does not have any spots on her. Should I separate her from the others, or is it too late and she's probably already infected, just not showing yet? :)

What treatment have you been given?

I would treat her too as she is likely to be infected, as long as all are being treated then can stay together.

Some cream for foot fungus. I dont know about the oral treatment because they were out of it at the pharmacy. I have to look for it at other places today :)

It is probably similar to Canesten or Daktarin. If you can get the oral medication it would really help. I would not have thought it possible to treat the mother if she has no sores to put the cream on. If you were dipping with Imaverol or giving oral medication it would be possible. However, as she has been with them so far it would not make sense to separate her now.

Yes, it's Daktarin! :) I'm worried it's not helping though, I know I should give it some time, but she has gotten pretty bad after I went to the vet and got the cream yesterday. I'm making a photo diary to see the changes every day. Is it ok if they squeal when I apply it? it sounds like they're in pain...

I would ask your vet for some pain relief which you can give half hour or so before putting the cream on. Ringworm will get worse before it gets better and unfortunately the Daktarin is not the most effective treatment.
