Need help with treating mites

Hi, I recently got my baby guinea pig from a rescue center and introduced it to my older one for the first time yesterday. For some reason the baby is scratching and squeaking like it is in pain So I picked him up and checked over him and he has a few bald patches and some scabs on his neck. He is roughly about 8 weeks old. I looked it up and I think it is definitely mites, my friend had this spray which is called Xeno 200 spray to treat internal and external parasites. Would I be able to use this on the baby? If I can how much do I use, and how fast does it kill the parasites? If that isn't suitable then I will buy Beaphar anti-parasite spot on. How much would I apply to it and how quickly does it prevent them? I don't want to take him to the vets yet as they are quite exspensive and many people have said that these treatments will work. Thank you x

it's worth considering that there could be a fungal infection, like ringworm. please don't put any chemicals on her skin, it is best to consult with a vet; especially since he's a baby. mite treatment is usually ivermectin injections. but again, consult with a vet before you do anything, you don't want to make him sick. good luck. guinealynx.com also has very useful information.

also, if it is mites or fungal, you'll have to treat the other pig too, since whatever it is was exposed to your other pig.

I would personally consult a vet before putting anything on the little one so that you can get the correct quantities. I would also stay well clear of the beaphar spot ons, the concentration of ivermectin in them is much decreased so is not always effective. As well I have heard of animals having reactions to the carrier fluid of the shop bought spot ons.

Please have your little boy checked by a vet to make sure that he is getting the right diagnosis (mites or fungal can look rather similar, especially in the early stages), as well as the right product at the appropriate strength for his size. In any way, you will also have to include his new friend in this and finish the whole course of any treatment to prevent a return; there ar!

Don't home treat; you can easily make problems worse. Shop products are pretty useless; they are engineered on too low a dose for effective treatment. We have a UK piggy savvy vet locator (as well as recommended good standard rescues locator) on the bar under the forum logo.

There are sadly no regulations for who can call themselves rescue. Unfortunately, not all rescues conduct a mandatory quarantine upon arrival or have the means to pay for ivermectin; there are some rescues out there that need rescuing from themselves.

Mites as well as fungal are opportunists that hit whenever the immune is lowered by stress, pregnancy or illness.
